The boys liked the Astroboy cartoon series - we never saw the movie as they were a bit too old by that point. I'll have a look when I get home and see if there is anything else that looks suitable.

Both asterix and tintin cartoon films are very popular here - to the point that ds1 used to put dh's old asterix videos on, despite being in French (he's not a French speaker; but when he was 3 he could do a passable attempt as a result of these films; albeit with a really rough gravelly deep voice that sounded like he was on 45 gitaines a day!)

They also saw the Smurfs film last week which they both loved.

They also in the past have enjoyed g-force if they like action style films - a very basic gentle take on the genre but with impressive effects.

Another set of films they have enjoyed recently are Tom & jerry... I got a box set of 3 films for £3 in morrisons. One of the discs has a film on, the other 2 are compilations of shorter cartoons but they have all been watched lots. Boomerang channel has also shown lots of their films recently; ds2 (a young 4 yr old) loves 2 in particular; one based on the nutcracker music so quite christmassy and one that based on Sherlock Holmes. The nutcracker one in particular is good for watching in the car as it is mostly just the nutcracker music - unlike most kids films these days which have lots of shrill talking that seems to penetrate even if you're not watching!

Check out film 4 on freeview or sky etc - I think they are showing lots of the studio ghibli (sp!) films at the moment which makes for an easy way to check them out.

My 6 year old ds loves the 3 newer Star Wars films (so 4,5,6??) he wasn't scared of them at all, but he had already seen the cartoon versions on Cartoon Network, and don't think they're too different in the level of violence.

WorkingtoohardMama · 11/04/2013 17:46

And I agree singlemama miss hannagin is definitely too much!!!

okay had a quick squint at the dvds

Ice Age movies
Alvin & the chipmunks movies
Wallace & Gromit?

soontobeslendergirl · 11/04/2013 18:39

My neighbours boys like the Johnny English movies - a lot of it goes over their heads, but I think they enjoy the slapstick element.

TheYamiOfYawn · 11/04/2013 18:48

I was going to suggest Motors, Kiki's delivery service and Kirikou, but I see that they are already on your list. The only other films my kids really like are Ponyo and The Wizard of Oz.

SingleMama · 11/04/2013 19:37

Thanks for all those. Keep em coming! ;-)

Wow TheYamiOfYawn your kids have exactly the same taste/are equally as film fussy as mine! ;-) Must check out Motors.

Yeah soontobeslendergirl my son loves anything slapstick. He actually liked the old Charlie Chaplin.

Motors was my phone's predictive text version of Totoro, sorry. My 6 year old days she also likes ScoobyDoo and Arietty.

soontobeslendergirl · 11/04/2013 21:10

I take it you have done the Home Alone movies then? What about Batteries not Included - story is a wee bit slow and over their heads, but he'd love the wee spaceships. Also whatever those ones are with Johnny 5 the Robot?? The Goonies?, Honey I shrunk the kids? Cheaper by the Dozen? RV?

soontobeslendergirl · 11/04/2013 21:11

Johnny 5 movie is Short Circuit.

soontobeslendergirl · 11/04/2013 21:12

Muppets movies?

soontobeslendergirl · 11/04/2013 21:14

we do a lot of Retro in our house, I don't like them having movies above their age and there are not a lot out for 11/12 year olds

Curious George! It's a lovely film, none of the horrible "everything goes wrong, everyone turns on the protagonist, cue sad music" theme that runs through 99% of films. It's funny without the double level of humour that hides adult jokes from the kids. Very sweet and entertaining.

SingleMama · 12/04/2013 09:30

Curious George the film? Like the series w the monkey? Must check that out.

I hated Macauley Culkin when I was little so home alone a no-goer. Ok maybe at Christmas.

(Cause it's films for the 3 of us Im looking for ideally)

That's funny theYamiofYawn those are the exact 3 films (the only ones!) my kids like: Totoro, Kiki & Kirikou!

SingleMama · 12/04/2013 09:48

Yeah Soontobeslendergirl a LOT of retro in our house too!
Snoopy is just amazing & my kids love oldschool Sesame Street & The Muppet Show.

The Muppet Christmas Carol is so cool! Sadly, since Disney took the reins, we hate all the Muppet films! My son even cried when I took him to see one of the latest Muppet films in the cinema. We had to walk out. Like Mother, like son!
