Have you seen "Don't Look Now"?

Came free with today's Observer.
I've been told it's a masterpiece.
I cannot cope with things with dead children in them.
Is it all about their daughter, really, or is that bit just a back story? (Like it was in Dead Calm: they were on the boat trying to escape from their lives after the accident etc.)
Is it worth watching?

Hmmm, haven't seen it post-children - it might be a bit harrowing but iirc it's more about the husband/wife relationship and the spooky goings-on in Venice than the actual death of the daughter. It's a bloody fantastic film, though.

mazzystar · 09/04/2006 21:41

It is a brilliant, brilliant film and worth watching for the infamous sex scene alone! It all hinges upon them as a couple and as individuals after death of their child, but its not about it if you know what I mean. Its more of a thriller than anything else, though.

Pruni · 09/04/2006 21:47

Hmm, am still undecided.
I think "a bit harrowing" might be too much for me.
Thanks, though. xx

I'm only really thinking of one scene in particular, Pruni. Agree it's probably worth watching for the sex scene, though - it's excellent Grin

Pruni · 09/04/2006 21:56

Hmmmmm

But as I fled the room and sobbed for half an hour at CSI the other night (psychotic mother/dead toddler), I think I might let myself off this one.

just hire a blue movie if you want a sex scene.

Pruni · 09/04/2006 21:59

Or pop in one of our vast collection of Swedish videos.

Its a very romantic sex scene. (you know the rumours? don't you?)

That episode of CSI was horrible. Its nothing like that.

georginarf · 09/04/2006 22:01

DH says it's the scariest film he's ever seen and refuses to watch it ever again
I caught the end on TV a few months ago and it scared the bejaysus out of me

snafu · 09/04/2006 22:02

Donald Sutherland does sport a rather Swedish plumberesque hairdo/moustache combo, it must be said...

Pruni · 09/04/2006 22:03

mazzystar, I have heard the rumours but in today's paper it says that Nic Roeg denied it.
It doesn't say it's not true though...

expatinscotland · 09/04/2006 22:04

nothing romantic about watching donald sutherland have sex. eeewwwww. boak.

Pruni · 09/04/2006 22:04

oh god if it's scary then I am definitely not watching it.

What has happened to me since having a child? I'm a different person.

mazzystar · 09/04/2006 22:05

I really fancy Donald Sutherland in that movie.

snafu · 09/04/2006 22:08

Donald Sutherland has always given me the creeps since I saw Invasion of the Body Snatchers. When he does that awful scream at the end - brrrrr. Much scarier than Don't Look Now.

drdad · 09/04/2006 23:51

It's a great, great film.

But, reading your posts, I'm not sure it's for you Pruni!

Socci · 10/04/2006 00:06

I really didn't like it for a number of reasons:

1 It has put me off ever going to Venice.

2 I found all the "red" references really unsubtle.

3 I did not like seeing Donald Sutherland's pasty backside.

suzywong · 10/04/2006 05:55

SPRAY@pastey back side

FWIW you should also stay away from the movie " A History of Violence" as you get more than eyeful of Vigo Mortentson's PBS

I liked the movie although my mum let me watch it far too young and I was convinced the dwarf lived behind her bedroom door for many years

allyco · 10/04/2006 10:05

is it the one with the dwarf in a red coat?

Never seen it as am far too scared...

MrsBadger · 10/04/2006 10:08

saw it as a student many years ago

was terrified

hated it

dumped the bloke who'd made me watch it

Can see that it's well-made and brilliant but, like Wagner, this doesn't mean I enjoy it.

allyco · 10/04/2006 10:20

MrsB - is the red-coat-wearing dwarf film then?

georginarf · 10/04/2006 10:20

yes it is the terrifying dwarf one. the only bit I've seen is the end and I refuse to see any more of it

allyco · 10/04/2006 10:27

Thank you. that was rankling with me even though I haven't seen the film. Did the dwarf kill the litle girl then?

Tinker · 10/04/2006 10:29

No, the dwarf didn't kill the girl Grin
