What are your favourites? Cheesy or more serious horror! Which scared you, and which had you laughing hysterically?

Personally, for me it's..

Dawn of the Dead (1978 version)
Not as cheesy as I first expected

28 Days Later
One of the artier horror films

Shaun of the Dead
Fantastically funny movie

The Orphanage
Totally freaked me out, and I don't get scared very often!

Blair Witch Project
Only other horror film to scare me

Candyman
Who else dared say "candyman" in the mirror?

House on Haunted Hill (black and white)
Vincent Price at his best

The Tingler
One of my all time favourite horror films

Isn't The Faculty a version of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers? Yeah, with Froddo Baggins (Elijah Wood).

Creep is a rip off tribute to a 1972 horror film called Death Line ('Raw Meat' in the US).

Worth a watch just for the line "Mind the doors?"

MandaHugNKiss · 22/10/2011 17:15

Yeah, Chris denied ever seeing that film, but I think it's perfectly obvious from reading after clicking through to your link even though I haven't seen it either...(and I've known him take a co-writing credit on something he had little input on, so... not inclined to believe him!)

MandaHugNKiss · 22/10/2011 17:23

Kerry Grin Donald's version for me.

Speaking of Mr Sutherland, I never quite understood the love that Don't Look Now gets. I mean, the loss of the ir daughter and how the guilt and grief resonates I could understand... but the final 'shock' killing was just... odd. I felt quite disconnected from them once they were in Italy and the psychic woman got involved.

For scares, the directors efforts with The Witches was better! But that's obviously more to do with Dahl's deliciously dark sense of humour and Angelica Huston Wink

Mandy2003 · 22/10/2011 18:16

Manda - you may like I Am Legend, which although not zombies (its muties - our word at home for infected mutants!) and is a bit medical/scientific in a light way (stars Will Smith!) is pretty good.

LaCiccolina · 22/10/2011 18:17

There was an old black and white film where some travellers stayed by mistake at a house. They ate the food and before long started glowing in the dark and slowly dying one by one. I watched when a child and I had nightmares for weeks. Saw it again recently on telly at 2 in the afternoon. I still couldn't turn it on and Im 35.

Then again Freddie films made me cry. Not the films just the idea of someone in my dreams.... Ideas are always better than the effects!

for the same reasons I quite like Final Destination. When the girl is hit by a bus, seriously, I jumped outta my chair. (Supernatural on tv is pretty neat too)

MandaHugNKiss · 22/10/2011 18:24

Thanks for the recommendation, mandy I have seen it already, though! It was easy watching - the book was much bleaker.

Deeelightful · 22/10/2011 20:15

Just been reminded of a movie my sister made me sit through whilst i was pregnant, It was called Baby Blues about a mother with pnd who tries to kill her 4 children...nice one sis! Not sure if it was hormones but i couldnt get it out my head for weeks!

30 Days of Night. Fantastic.

My apologies if it's been mentioned

limitedperiodonly · 22/10/2011 21:26

Mind the doors indeed tethers

limitedperiodonly · 22/10/2011 21:32

Manda I really like the remake of Dawn of The Dead because it had the same spirit of mischief as Romero.

Love the sequence where they are shooting celebrity zombies from the safety of the roof - is that really Britney and Letterman or just lookalikes?

Love the bleak ending.

If anyone's a fan of weird old B&W films we went to see a Halloween double bill of Freaks & The Devil Doll. They are both quite notorious, Freaks in particular as the actors were genuine freaks at the time of making (if I can say that). Both were quite odd to watch as there were bits that were laughable by today's standards but there were really creepy bits too.

Slacking9to5 · 23/10/2011 10:26

Nosferatu.1922 version.
By far the scariest Dracula ever.

TheVampireEmpusa · 23/10/2011 10:31

Freaks is really interesting, fascinating to watch.

That Running Man film with Arnold Schwarzeneneneneeggeneneger. It's terrifying. Because It. Will. Happen. One. Day. Don't say I didnt' warn you.

MandaHugNKiss · 23/10/2011 10:52

SOH Many people don't realise that The Running Man was a Stephen King adaptation (when he wrote under the Bachman pseudonym) from 1982...talk about ahead of his time. Another short from the collection it was published in (The Bachman Books) is a prophectic tale called Rage detailing a kid going off and shooting his fellow pupils and teachers. I believe King insisted it was withdrawn from publication in the US after that kind of thing started happening for real.

You obviously liked The Running Man, so I wholeheartedly recommend you give The Bachman Books a go - the only weak link is the story Roadblock but The Long Walk is also a stunning, bleak portrayal of what humans will do when desperate.

ShowOfHands · 23/10/2011 11:50

I have them manda!

RedRumElmosMum · 23/10/2011 13:07

Well Going on all your recommendations i watched "The Orphanage " last night (thank you) it was great . [hsmile] The ending was very sad though .

ninah · 23/10/2011 13:14

lol redrum I did too! it's not scary though ... and what was the police pyschologist about, Pilar? seemed to be lots of hints that I didn't quite get and that weren't fully explored ...HIV, blood etc, her relationship w husband ... good film that needed beefing up to be really scary imo

RedRumElmosMum · 23/10/2011 13:19

The old woman was the creepiest thing about the movie - Those glasses Grin
Yeah i found it left a lot of things unexplained too but i really enjoyed it .

ninah · 23/10/2011 13:23

I had a great aunt with those glasses! in fact she looked a bit like Benigna...if she poisoned all the kids, why the hatchet? I thought it was great esp the lighthouse bits but the unresolved bits bothered me a lot. and the fact they never changed their clothes even in bed.

RedRumElmosMum · 23/10/2011 13:27

Did your Aunt ever work in an Orphanage ?Wink

LOL i did wonder about the lack of clothes but just reckoned they were dirty buggers Grin

ZombiesAteMySorelip · 23/10/2011 19:33

Manda the Long Walk is one of my favourite Stephen King stories, and it scared the crap out of me, because I can see it happening in the future.

ThingsThatGoFlumpInTheNight · 24/10/2011 19:55

There was a film I wanted to watch and I've forgotten the name of it. This is a little bit random but last Halloween Paul Ross was talking about good films to watch at Halloween on This Morning.

One of the films he recommended looked really creepy - it was a european low budget film and the clip shown was of someone driving down a road at dusk and then stopping because there's something in the road. The thing in the road is a small dog, which turns and stares into the car, and then its face goes really strange and creepy looking. That's all I can remember.

If anyone can tell me what that film is called I will award them with copious amounts of Wine and Thanks - it's been driving me mad since last halloween Smile
