Watched this today, and left two lady OAPs arguing furiously about the end.

Interesting film - was the soundtrack buggered, or does it really wooow and streeeetch to indicate moments of tension?

I can see how some critics assess it as being a horror film.

Natalie Portman was very good. as was bizarro Winona Ryder in a tiny but perfectly-formed role.

Am going to see it tomorrow night so will let you know what I think!

PassionKiss · 26/01/2011 13:56

Saw it last night and loved it! Was expecting it to be darker than it was - it was quite funny in parts (intentionally??)

The ending was OTT and a bit hammy. I was a bit pissed off that the only way she could achieve great artistic heights was to go bonkers and kill herself (although she didn't necessarily die I guess)

Natalie Portman was stunning - loved the clothes she wore and the ballet costumes.

MaggieW · 26/01/2011 18:19

I saw it this afternoon with a friend and we both came away feeling dissatisfied...and not understanding totally which bits were her delusions and which were real...can anyone enlighten ie did the fall in the performance really happen? Was her Mum really so stifling or was that her delusion?

upahill · 26/01/2011 19:03

I am nominating this for the worst film I've seen in years. Unbelievably bad and laughed all the way through it near enough.

I'm hoping Abel is going to be better (the next film I see!)

noddyholder · 26/01/2011 20:38

Saw it today i really liked it Thought she was stunning really seamless performance and possibly one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen.

upahill · 27/01/2011 14:16

Hi Noddy I agree with you about Natalie Portman being beautiful. She looked gorgeous. Her dancing was good and I have read about her training schedule for months before filming began.

Me and mate got fed up of her charcters simpering and gasping and thought she was a bit wet and that got on our nerves.

We went yesterday to and were thankful that it was Orange Wednesday and only paid £2 each!!

noddyholder · 27/01/2011 19:01

I loved the character thought that was how she was supposed to be.That whole world can be toxic.I had a v close friend when I was waitressing through college and she was doing ballet at that level and they openly took drugs, vomited starved etc and were all really wired!

Curiousmama · 31/01/2011 00:59

I was really looking forward to it but mixed reviews on here?

upahill · 31/01/2011 11:08

Curiousmama....... maybe go on Orange Wednesday then you won't feel bad when your ticket has only cost £2.00 once you've split hte price with a friend!!

Curiousmama · 31/01/2011 16:20

good idea upahill Smile

upahill · 31/01/2011 17:23

Saying that curiousmama you may love it.
We just got irritated with Natalie Portman gasping and simpering all the time!

And the pseudo creepy music

And all the melodrama...... I could go on!

Curiousmama · 01/02/2011 19:08

Grin well we're taking my mum tomorrow and it's a wednesday so will have to get exdh to get me a couple of codes. Is it 2 for 1? Or half price?

teahouse · 01/02/2011 19:21

I saw it yesterday; giggled through some of it and didn't like the rest.

Really sorry but not my avourite film.

Ooopsadaisy · 01/02/2011 19:24

Going 2nite.

I'm going with friend who is big ballet/classical music fan. Bit worried I will giggle in the wrong places etc and not understand what's going on.

Not sure I'm going to like it ....

upahill · 01/02/2011 20:30

Curiousmama if it is the Orange deal you only pay for one ticket. If you are going to an evening session it gets really busy.
Remember to take your phone!!

We went to a mid afternoon session so it was super saver tickets for about 4quid so me and mate just split the price.

I hope you enjoy but we got bored and mate was muttering ' I wish she would get some backbone and stop simmpering!' Grin

Ooopsadaisy · 02/02/2011 10:41

Following on from previous post - I saw it last night.

I'm afraid it wasn't good.

I'm all for a psychological thriller but the horror in this was all too explicit rather than implicit.

Too much, too much (if you see what I mean).

Dead bodies not being there when you look again? Oh puuuuuurlease. It's like Scooby Doo.

Natalie Portman is a fine actress though.

Curiousmama · 02/02/2011 19:02

We went and I wasn't in love with it. Acting was good. Script weird and too dark for me. No real story.

Dp said 'basically it's the story of someone who should be a mental patient?' Mum loved it though bless her.

daimbardiva · 06/02/2011 20:41

I found it very stressful - it wasn't what I was expecting at all. The "horror" dimension was a lot more explicit than I expected and I found a lot of it very unsettling.

That said, I did think it was a good film - well styled and crafted and Natalie Portman was really good (if a bit annoying). I would have liked more depth to her character tbh - and yes, a bit more background on her relationship with her mother.

BibiThree · 08/02/2011 14:34

Right, I'm going to see this tonight, will I leave feeling sick? I'm not good with gore and gratuitous violent acts.

daimbardiva · 09/02/2011 15:12

I had to look away several times, but it's more shocking than out and out gory, if that makes any sense?! I left feeling exhausted and very tense!!!

CornflowerB · 09/02/2011 15:44

I lefe feeling a bit dirty to be honest. Bit uncomfortable at my age looking at so many lingering shots of a much younger woman simulating masturbation and lesbian sex. So many cliches: director exploiting young dancer - yawn; failed ballerina pushes her daughter to dance Swan Lake - yawn again. Young woman's sexual awakening turns her into some kind of monster: what on earth is that saying? Yes, she was beautiful and gave a good performance, but it was all too melodramatic, as others have said above. The costumes and the dancing were good, but it was so obvious that it wasn't Natalie Portman in the long shots and in the close ups her arms positions were not accurate enough to be convincing (ok being very picky here because I am a ballet fan). But what was the point of the film really? If it was meant to be a portrait of a descent into madness, it was far too glossy. It wasn't scary enough to be a horror. So what was it meant to be?

CornflowerB · 09/02/2011 15:46

BibiThree - there was one self-harming scene that turned my stomach - any time you see any blood, close your eyes because it gets worse.

echt · 11/02/2011 06:14

Have a look at Jim Carrey's skit on "Black Swan" on youtube.

I thought it was crap. Even the scary bits weren't scary, they were funny.
