I feel sad about Angela Rayner

OK, I am left leaning so maybe I am already biased, BUT, I do feel sad that a woman who overcame early issues, who was “proper” working class, who didn’t speak the kings English, but rather with a proper local dialect, and achieved a high office without a single spoon in her working class mouth, has gone.

i do understand that many people will agree with what has happened. I would have been fuming if the story played out the way it had as a different party, and I understand that Angela had to go, BUT as a woman who believes in holding up other women, particularly those who aren’t born to certain families, or have expectations placed on them from word go, I do feel a bit sad this morning.

There was a working class woman in the House of Commons. A working class woman was the deputy prime minister of this country. It is not even 100 years since working class women could vote. I feel sad.

She was juggling care of a differently abled child, divorce, buying a flat, roles of housing minister, deputy prime minister and constituency MP. No small wonder she made a mistake.

Give over. If she didn’t feel able to spin all these plates, then she shouldn’t have taken on the role. Being the deputy to the PM brings huge responsibility, so she should have declined it if she felt it was too much, otherwise she’s doing a huge disservice to the people she’s representing. Simple as that really.

BIossomtoes · 06/09/2025 20:10

She plainly circumvented those rules quite intentionally in her sale of her ex council house to avoid paying capital gains tax,

She didn’t. HMRC investigated twice and said no tax was payable twice.

She appears to have neighbours who lie quite frequently. They were found out when the CGT issue arose.

Livelovebehappy · 06/09/2025 20:11

Tbh,the worst thing about this whole fiasco was the fact she was prepared to bring down her law firm by lying to save her own skin. She would happily have seen the firms reputation lying in tatters so that she stay in her post. That issue on its own says more about her morals than anything else. Awful woman who deserves everything she got.

Yep. Horrible person. No principles.

browneyes77 · 06/09/2025 20:24

I don’t.

She fucked around and found out.

If that had been the case she’d have named them. She didn’t.

BumpedmyElbow · 06/09/2025 20:29

I like to imagine the other person she took legal advice from was actually Keir Starmar and that's why he stuck by her and she couldn't really out the giver of the bad advice.

genesis92 · 06/09/2025 20:30

IGaveSoManySigns · 06/09/2025 06:34

Me too.

She took legal advice, it was wrong, and now she’s being hung out to dry over it. Meanwhile, the tories fleeced us for years and got celebrated for it.

They got celebrated for it? Are you sure about that?

The Tories are more unpopular then they’ve ever been, they’re practically extinct as a party now.

RavenhairedRachel · 06/09/2025 20:32

Although I see where you're coming from I don't particularly feel sorry for her for the simple reason she viciously berated other politicians for the same thing, calling for them to resign. So to me she had no option than to put her money where her mouth was. Having said that she did bring a different dimension to the labour party in complete contrast to that utter buffoon Starmer and look who he's replaced her with. All I can say is we're doomed.

genesis92 · 06/09/2025 20:32

I can understand your reasons for feeling sad about it, but she was just a massive fucking hypocritical idiot to do what she did. End of really

Plantatreetoday · 06/09/2025 20:35

No I don’t feel sorry for people who don’t pay their taxes

nor do I agree we should promote women just because they are women
or promote people based on how much money they had
or allow for excuses based on having a complex family set up.

I respect people that act within the law and are also able to achieve without allowances or going for the sympathy vote

personally I’m hopping her constituents see through the lies and don’t vote her in at next election

Oh come on. It was all over the internet within hours of her sob story/intervew. Not difficult to find out who it was - she would have known the information would be easy for the media to get hold of.

Bateson · 06/09/2025 20:40

I’ve just looked on gov.uk. Instances in which you are liable for the higher rate of stamp duty are listed clearly, including if you have a minor with property in trust. I was surprised how clear it was.

It was a lie to save her skin and she got rumbled.

Marshmallow4545 · 06/09/2025 20:46

If I were left leaning then I would be furious with her. She has simply confirmed in many people's minds that those on the left are too often huge hypocrites. Happy to demand others to pay more and more into a system they get very little out of but when it comes to the lefties paying their 'fair' share' then time and time again it is proven that they are no less self serving than the rest of us.

The thing that annoys me the most is that she undoubtedly believes that she is somehow a special case because of her disabled child etc. The thing is, we all live complex lives and many of the people she wants to target with her tax raids have similarly complex situations that aren't as cut and dry as people being either poor or rich. She should know better to know that the world isn't binary and yet all her policies and ideas are based on this ideology.

Thelonelydonkey · 06/09/2025 20:46

She is an embarrassment to women. That's the only feminist angle there is. There is no excuse for her not seeking specialist advice.

mummyto9angels · 06/09/2025 20:50

Agree I definitely don't think she did anything knowingly wrong. I like her and I hate that this is the sort of thing the tories patted each other on the back for

GabrielsOboe · 06/09/2025 20:51

Given Rayner’s colourful private life, I don’t see her returning to political life in any meaningful way tbh.

She will probably be able to generate a few quid from her memoirs and the speaking circuit, though (I’m not a buyer…)

She appears to have neighbours who lie quite frequently. They were found out when the CGT issue arose.

HMRC found twice that they were unable to prove that she had not been using the property as her primary residence. We are nonetheless able to draw our own conclusions. Funny how many of her neighbours appear to be liars who are very keen to lie to Angela's detriment!

dottiehens · 06/09/2025 21:01

Sesma · 06/09/2025 06:47

I don't, she wanted to shaft everyone else for tax but not pay it herself.

Exactly! Why the left never seems to want to hold their people accountable and accept when they let them down. Otherwise. They are very loud and quick to do it to other politicians.

The gloating, and the gleeful tone about her wage reduction, in various newspapers today (eg the Telegraph) is making me feel very, very uneasy.
I’m not enjoying any part of this.

The gloating and mocking at Truss and Kwarteng was a hundred times this and they hadn't even been dishonest, but Tories so no-one felt "uneasy" at the treatment of a woman and a man from a minority group.

Yes, when it was Truss it was mean and nasty and personal.

OSTMusTisNT · 06/09/2025 21:25

I loved having a female, relatively young, Council Estate, Northern Accent policitian in one of the the top jobs.

But like many MP's before her, her dodgy financial affairs let down the working class people she was trying to represent .

bumbaloo · 06/09/2025 21:27

beguilingeyes · 06/09/2025 06:30

Raises hand me too. I believe it was an honest mistake and TPTB and the media have been gunning for her from day one.

It required lots of decision. Not a single decision made in error. If she made lots of choices and decisions to end up with convolutions that resulted in saving that much tax by mistake then she’s too stupid to be in parliament.
If it was all intentional then she clearly is not in the right job.

TheRozzers · 06/09/2025 21:30

Not a fan of hers but yes it’s sad. Also quite irresponsible of the BBC to keep showing her flat on the news. Anyone local now knows exactly where she lives.

simplesimoneatspie · 06/09/2025 21:34

I feel sad that such a shameless and deceitful person was ever allowed to sit in the position of deputy pm.
