“The person I’m married to……”

Mindlessly watching Dragon’s Den last night.

Young couple lining up to go in. In the pre-amble, he introduces them as “I’m Aaron, I’m 23, and this is Zara, the person I’m married to. They’re 24.”

Nothing androgynous about either of them.

Have Hallmark spotted this untapped market?

Happy Birthday to the person I’m married to
Happy Person-that-birthed-my-child’s Day
Etc

Employer’s phone rings

”Hi, this is the person that is married to Aaron. He’s not well today and won’t be in.”

Employee emergency contact details

Name: Zara
phone number: 01234 567890
relationship: person I’m married to

I mean there is a gender neutral term for the person you're married to (spouse) so sounds like Aaron is just bad at speaking rather than making a point. Maybe you had to be there!

PickAChew · 31/01/2025 16:49

Maybe Aaron simply doesn't want to talk abut Zara as if he owns her.

BoeotianNightmare · 31/01/2025 16:50

This was so irritating and jarring. I don't get how this bloke goes about his life always saying "they" and "the person in married to" for his obviously female spouse. Can't he say, "my partner"?

Maybe Aaron simply doesn't want to talk abut Zara as if he owns her.

Unlikely given he felt the need to introduce himself and “them” rather than letting “them” speak for “themself”. And then referred to them as “them”.

It sounded very rehearsed.

found this.

“Zara is the first openly non-binary contestant on the show.
In 2024, Zara shared on LinkedIn: "I am, and always have been, non-binary, polyamorous, and pansexual.

“”I've reached a point in my life where I want to feel like myself in all contexts.”

“"One of the reasons I chose the startup life was to have the ability to tailor my work and environment to my needs, and this is what I'm doing now.”

”And Zara shared hopes that their appearance would "inspire others." The entrepreneur said: “The startup world, and the media more broadly, often feel bare of LGBTQ+ representation, especially for gender non-conforming and trans founders.””

Okay.

I know I'm really, really old, and really, really jaded, but I just find all this stuff so attention seeking.

MagpiePi · 31/01/2025 17:18

”I've reached a point in my life where I want to feel like myself in all contexts."

What does that even mean?
Previous employers and colleagues have hinted that they're bored to tears of hearing about them's fascinating non-binary, androgenous and polyamorous lifestyle, as they are all labels that no-one knows you have unless you keep banging on about the all the bloody time?

“The startup world, and the media more broadly, often feel bare of LGBTQ+ representation, especially for gender non-conforming and trans founders.””

The media is bare of alphabet people? Yeah right🙄

Edited for typos

BoeotianNightmare · 31/01/2025 17:24

I'm guessing Zara may reach a point in Zara's life where Zara realises no-one much cares.

Can't help feeling the non binary phenomenon is young women trying to opt out of something. For which I'd be very sympathetic. But sorry to say, whatever it is will most likely get them in the end no matter what pronouns they choose to go by.

Sunshineofyourlove · 31/01/2025 17:25

It must be very dull to take oneself so seriously all the time.

dogwalkersarethebest · 31/01/2025 17:26

When will the world get bored of all such bollox ?

QueSyrahSyrah · 31/01/2025 17:35

“One of the reasons I chose the startup life was to have the ability to tailor my work and environment to my needs, and this is what I'm doing now.”

It's this bit that gets me. Why would a work environment need to be tailored to your polyamory or pansexuality needs? My work environment has never had even the slightest connection to my sexuality.

I once spent 5 mins thinking about using the pronoun "they" at work to make a point (there was alot of sexism). I concluded that it will piss absolutely everyone in the whole company off, including myself to keep that up. It only took me 5 mins to work that out.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 31/01/2025 17:38

Is it only me who is mentally saying "the person to whom I am married"?

MrsJamin · 31/01/2025 17:39

I've yet to meet a non binary person that doesn't have significant mental health issues. It's a cry for help.

Yes but they're so obviously opting in to something

I truly believe we’ve nearly reached the peak of the mountain of shit. I am holding on with hope for the other side and a brighter future.🤞

No.

But if you can’t work out the sex of the person to whom you are married, your grammatical failures come way down the list of intellectual shortcomings.

BTW, if you are married, doesn’t the marriage certificate have to specify your sex/ gender? Doesn’t matter what it is, but it is recorded.

AcquadiP · 31/01/2025 17:45

"I've reached a point in my life where I want to feel like myself in all contexts.”

I've reached a point in my life where as soon as someone starts speaking like this my ears switch of.

myplace · 31/01/2025 17:48

I feel a little sorry for the person to whom ‘they’ is married. I would struggle with a pansexual, polyamorous, non binary spouse for whom I have to speak (and in long non grammatical syntax, at that).

BoeotianNightmare · 31/01/2025 17:56

tobee · 31/01/2025 17:43

Yes but they're so obviously opting in to something

They are opting in to an ideological fantasy called gender ideology that's making life harder for all females.

Is that what you meant?

Kuretake · 31/01/2025 17:56

I still don't get why he couldn't say this is my spouse. I guess to draw extra attention
