That's excellent. I hope that more councils and police forces will follow this example.

VoodooQualities · 14/10/2024 08:55

Excellent, I hope it continues and that there's a programme of local communications to (1) celebrate this and (2) further win mens hearts and minds over to the cause so that the better behaviour gets properly embedded.

(I am from Bradford originally, not relevant really but I thought I'd mention it!)

AlwaysGinPlease · 14/10/2024 08:58

This is fantastic. Only a loser catcalls.

Hatfullofwillow · 14/10/2024 08:58

I hope this gets rolled out nationwide.

wulves · 14/10/2024 09:00

"In fact, one of the males who was stopped even stated he was 'encouraging the females to run'.

Says it all really.

Listen up ladies. When a man sexually harasses you, it’s actually encouragement, and you should be grateful.

GCAcademic · 14/10/2024 09:02

Funny how these losers never seem to "encourage" other men to run.

Blankname22 · 14/10/2024 09:06

What age are these men? Are they elderly who missed out on being educated on equality? Dirty old uncle kind of people?
I don't really understand in this day and age how men can cat call women out of their car and think it is OK to do that!

PurpleSparkledPixie · 14/10/2024 09:07

The council said the initiative had run six operations since march to catch men engaged in catcalling.

SIX??! Usually they only do the one so how many did they catch to warrant doing another one, and another, and another 😱

wulves · 14/10/2024 09:17

The one and only time I tried jogging on my own, I was pipped at. There is something in particular about a woman jogging that fires up predatory men. Maybe they see prey on the run. I wasn’t wearing any tight-fitting exercise clothing either, so it wasn’t my attire to ‘blame’. Simply the act of moving more quickly than usual did it. And no I’m not blaming women’s clothing, just making a point that jogging v walking sets these men off, it doesn’t take anything else.

Hoppinggreen · 14/10/2024 09:20

DD (then 16) took up running in Lockdown and every single time without fail she was shouted at/followed etc by men in cars and came home upset
We bought her a treadmill
Its disgusting and I am glad its being taken seriously for once.

That's not really true. A lot of what is shouted from passing cars is not sexual, just stupid "keep running" type phrases and the men get it too (and mixed groups I have run with).
Men don't get sexual comments though.

SerendipityJane · 14/10/2024 10:54

Shame the article is fact-lite. Is there a grown up version ?.

Igmum · 14/10/2024 10:56

Well done Bradford. Now let's see the rest of the country take this on too.

Good,I'd like to be a fly on the wall when creepy guy has to explain to dw/gf as to where the car is.

SerendipityJane · 14/10/2024 13:27

The law is already clear. The whole of Bradford District is covered by a public space protection order (PSPO) that explicitly prohibits, ‘Shouting or swearing at, or abusing, threatening or otherwise intimidating (including by the use of sexual language or making sexual suggestions) to another person.’

I am presuming that this gives powers to seize cars ?

I don't know but I love the fact they're getting their cars confiscated.

What a brilliant idea - so simple and so effective!

offyoujollywelltrot · 14/10/2024 20:41

I definitely welcome this for the safety of women and girls in Bradford, but I'd also like to say that I think one of the biggest reasons they've done this, is because Bradford has the city of culture malarkey coming up, and they want to keep things as pleasant as possible. They've also been clearing the city of anyone who appears to be homeless or vulnerable. Sweeping everything under the carpet so to speak.

This needs to be rolled out nationwide, but in this instance a lot of it is about looking good to people outside of Bradford.

Wellwhatsthis · 14/10/2024 21:01

Is cat-calling regional? I live near Glasgow and run outside several times a week, always alone - sometimes at work, sometimes near home or other local areas. I have been shouted at from a van (once), horn tooted from a van (once), from a car (once), called a cunt by teenagers (once) and given unsolicited advice from an old man (once).
I often wonder on these threads if Glasgow men are less likely to shout at women or just at women runners.

That seems to be a lot of abuse to me. Are you saying it's not?

This is over perhaps ten years of running four or five days a week. Only the teenage boys were threatening although I would prefer not to be tooted at etc.

It would be interesting to find out how many incidents female runners get on average. As you say it sounds like Bradford has more incidents as the police said that women were complaining of being regularly cat called, etc.

Yes sadly this is true . I remember the one day I went to open up a shop in the city centre and was amazed because it was the first time I’d unlocked and there’d been no homeless camp on the doorstep. As I looked along the street I noticed all doorways were clear, not just ours. It soon became clear though. The homeless people had been cleared away for a Royal visit.
That said , I applaud this initiative and hope it goes some way to improve the safety of women in Bradford.
As it is, hell would freeze over before I took the almighty risk of jogging in the city. I need to save my energy for the times when I actually need to run away, and there have been a few, unfortunately.

I wonder how many men he 'encouraged' to run? 🤷🏼‍♀️
