Another surrogacy news story...

TheseCowsAreSmall · 23/02/2024 16:16

This time from Northern Ireland. Couple have bought a baby from Ukraine and couldn't get out, leaving their teenage son at home alone.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-68370377

I'm sorry for the loss of their daughter but surrogacy is abhorrent & unethical. Exploitation of women's bodies & the trafficking of babies can never be justified.

And that name...

It just gets worse as you read through.

Buying a baby.

From a war zone.

To replace a dead child.

Leaving their grieving teenager at home, and risking orphaning him not long after he lost his sister.

While he's preparing for his exams.

(That last bit is probably the smallest issue, but on top of everything else...)

mydogisthebest · 23/02/2024 19:34

So so selfish

GreenYoshi12 · 23/02/2024 19:43

The only argument I can see is that of risking going to the Ukraine to collect their baby. They didn’t buy their baby.
How many people collect pets from abroad and then go and collect them? It’s the same principle imo.

taybert · 23/02/2024 20:00

I couldn’t believe what I was reading when I saw this earlier. It’s absolutely astounding.

Meadowy · 23/02/2024 20:04

Green - they did buy a baby. And comparing getting a pet to buying a baby is utterly vile.

I feel so, so sorry for their son - the grieving boy they’ve left behind to look after the farm while in his exam years. Knowing he isn’t enough for his parents. Knowing his Mum is in such distress that she thinks that buying a baby from a war zone in your mid 50s is a good idea. The poor boy has a high chance of ending up as a career for the baby.

Putadonkonit · 23/02/2024 20:10

The mother must have been very desperate to become pregnant in this situation whilst living in a war zone. This is massively unethical. And as PPs have said, not at all healthy for their older son. Incredibly selfish.

What so if your parents have another baby after you ‘you aren’t enough for them’
Maybe they wanted another baby? Maybe he wanted a sibling? None of us are to know.
And no - I’m not comparing a pet to baby - it was the collecting of a family member from abroad but people aren’t up in arms about the pet issue.

Bramblecrumble22 · 23/02/2024 20:19

They definitely should have paid for therapy instead of surrogocy. They are trying to convince themselves they are doing it for their son, he doesn't need a sibling young enough to be his child. Won't replace his sister.

Also, zero mention of the surrogate in the article.

lochmaree · 23/02/2024 20:36

I read this earlier and came looking for a post on here. I just couldn't believe what I was reading. absolutely horrendous. they started the process AFTER the war had started, to 'commission' a baby literally in a war zone, have another woman carry and birth it, then leave their 15yo behind while they risk their lives to go and collect their baby.

to the pp who said its not the parents saying their 15yo isn't enough for them - they pretty much say they're having this baby because their eldest died.

taybert · 23/02/2024 20:50

The lack of mention of the surrogate really struck me. Everything about how dangerous it is for them and “their” baby and how they need the process to be expedited to get them home. But nothing about the woman who just completed a pregnancy in a war zone and will be left there after her baby is taken. I’ve no idea at all who would ever think any of that was ok.

And yes, people collect pets from other countries but if someone went out to collect a pet they’d ordered and bought from a warzone then were begging the government to get them back asap I’d say they were a fucking idiot at the very least.

Meadowy · 23/02/2024 21:17

Green- they haven’t had another baby though, they’ve gone to extreme lengths to buy a child to replace the poor lad’s sister - they say as much themselves.

i don’t know how anyone can defend their actions - do you know them or something?

DarkDarkNight · 23/02/2024 22:43

A baby isn’t a dog though, it’s not the same at all.

DrSpartacular · 23/02/2024 22:56

We shouldn't be importing pets either.

And worth remembering that puppies have better protection than newborns, legally remaining with their mother for the first 8 weeks.

Watercolourpapier · 23/02/2024 23:06

Disgusting. How desperate the baby's mother must have been to agree to surrogacy in a war zone. No mention of her in the article, she's nothing more than a uterus to hire. And leaving their son at home while they travel to somewhere with a huge risk of death, leaving him to deal with the risk of him being left without his entire family in one go.

What a pair of absolute pricks.

KnickerlessParsons · 23/02/2024 23:30

Apart from anything else- Jaunty Beau??🧐

Of course they bought a baby. What a ridiculous comment

Don't even. Ludicrous.

Jaunty is used as a nickname or kind of joke word in NI for an over confident man. Like a cocky wee shite type.

The whole situation is bizarre and concerning.

Itsachange · 24/02/2024 08:36

The name is the least awful part of that situation.

DontForgetWhereYouCameFrom · 24/02/2024 08:46

My mouth dropped open in horror when I read this article yesterday. I was astounded at the breath taking selfishness of this pair. The tone of the article was 'poor them' and I just wanted to scream.

Their poor teenaged son, that poor surrogate, and as for Jaunty Beau ☹️

All of it is awful, I'd love to think his name is the least awful part but it just compounds the horror.

Utter utter dickheads.

Aydel · 24/02/2024 14:57

Due to a previous job I met several people who used Ukrainian surrogates. Not one of them showed any concern or consideration for the birth mother once they had the baby.

Jaunty Beau is a ridiculous name. It’s like fashion advice “tie the scarf in a jaunty bow.”

Carriemac · 24/02/2024 17:21

What a horrible story . The poor son left behind

Do you show concern for the adoptive mother as well if you adopt?

Bubblybooboo · 24/02/2024 17:28

Ukraine is in a fucking war. These people purposely paid for a baby to be born in a country at war!!! Sorry but that is utter utter selfishness. I feel terrible for their loss of their child, but that in no way justifies exploitation of women or choosing to do surrogacy in a country at war.

Course not. If they cared about them they would have found it hard to exploit them.

LambriniBobinIsleworth · 24/02/2024 18:36

This is hugely sad for everyone.
