I don't think I've ever been angrier at a politician. And that is saying something in this political climate. Surely the Home Secretary should go?

James Cleverly

Home Secretary James Cleverly criticised over drink spiking joke

The home secretary apologises for making an "ironic joke" at a Downing Street event, a spokesman says.

Perhaps @CrispsandCheeseSandwich I tend to think it was 'tongue in cheek' and not meant to be taken seriously.
I still think he was foolish to make the 'joke' in his position. Very aware I'm in the minority here though, and I see the other point of view. No thought policing here!

Aren't jokes meant to be funny?

Is date rape funny?

ploikj · 24/12/2023 10:10

@EmmaGrundyForPM "appalled" though? Really? Outraged and demanding he leave? I don't believe most men will have that reaction. Nor a lot of women either, we are used to women being treated with this level of distain.

IWFH · 24/12/2023 10:11

But loads of women here continually say they'll vote Tory because
'at least the Tories know what women are' Clearly...

But honestly - is anyone remotely surprised at this latest revelation about how corrupt, unpleasant, venal and amoral Tory MPs are?

Many normal workers would find themselves on a disciplinary for such comments, their careers in tatters.

Imagine a Police Officer or a Barrister making similar "jokes" & by the way, rape, which is the usual reason for spiking a drink is no matter for humour, in fact i worked in the defence industry, if i'd made jokes like that, i'd have been dismissed.

He is the Home Secretary, if he cannot function without making these sorts of comments, then he is unfit for his current role, you are just making a very weak attempt at defending him.

But as @jgw1 says, he clearly knows what a woman is (and in his opinion, her main purpose in life) so he has my vote too.

Lots of evidence to show the also deeply misogynistic police force do speak like this about women. It's a rot in society that we ought to have stamped on by now but it seems to have actually become worse - because anyone who complains is mocked, called a snowflake, or the wokerati.

That kind of toxic climate enables tis awful canteen culture.

But icymi he said this not just about but to women at a function which was following a government pledge - from his own office about drink spiking. It wasn't behind close doors and part of some kind of sting operation. And it really is nothing like David Cameron's football gaffe or Gordon Brown's bigot comment. In fact, could anyone ever imagine Gordon Brown even thinking something like this?

Raab called his wife his missus once and said something about taking the knee. Thsi, again, is a whole different league.

Anyone actually found the text of Cleverly's alleged apology yet??

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/12/2023 10:12

Cleverly is a dick but I'm also pretty sure he is TWAW like many misogynistic men so I'm not sure what all the odd sneering is about.

ploikj · 24/12/2023 10:13

Which is why it is important that we have men in charge who know what a woman is.

So they know who to give a shit about? I don't share your admiration for the Tories because of their political stance on genitalia. They don't give a shit, it plays with their right wing voter base. If they thought they'd get votes they'd call change stance immediately.

ploikj · 24/12/2023 10:15

Sorry that was meant for @IClaudine not @EmmaGrundyForPM

I took the (admittedly poor taste) thing he said as a joke against himself, not against women.

What about it is a joke against himself, other than the bit he tagged on at the end?

He makes a joke about women' reluctance to have sex? That's 1970s stand up territory? He says he has to sedate her , using a rape drug as his reference?

Let's not forget the legal matter of the home secretary joking that ' a little bit' of a Class C drug is 'hardly illegal'.

It sounds like a working man's club joke from the 70s - the captive audience there was usually male...

I am sure he thought the women there would find it hilarious thta he appeared to be suggesting his wife is so much better than him - but it's not the main drift of the 'joke'.

Piggywaspushed · 24/12/2023 10:17

Much like Cleverly's apparent 'irony', not sure yours is landing jgw !

ploikj · 24/12/2023 10:19

@Piggywaspushed 🙈 no sorry it went over my head, so used to dogged posters being like that I took it at face value haha.

Piggy, it was just "a spokesperson said blah, and for this he deeply apologises" which makes me think he's been told to STFU and is on his way for a brief chat with Rishi.

Cleverly
Piggywaspushed · 24/12/2023 10:20

Aha - so he hasn't actually apologised!

A spokesperson for the home secretary said: “In what was always understood as a private conversation, James, the home secretary, tackling spiking made what was clearly meant to be an ironic joke – for which he apologises.”

Piggywaspushed · 24/12/2023 10:21

Cross post! Sorry and thank you!

I don't know what you mean!

Lottapianos · 24/12/2023 10:48

'An ironic joke?' 🤦🏻‍♂️

Yes it's always the same bullshit defence - Mr Comedy has such a sophisticated sense of humour, and it's not his problem if the ACTUAL meaning has flown over everyone's heads

What an arsehole

NewsOverload · 24/12/2023 11:02

If a similar thing was said about any other race, culture, sexual or gender identity, he'd be forced to resign. As it's belittling women it's classed as ironic. Disgusting man and sums up the Torys for me.

Piggywaspushed · 24/12/2023 11:07

Oh come on, the Tories spout bullshit about all of the above, too.

The difference is knowing what a woman is, is the key issue of our age, and (not so) Cleverly has demonstrated that he does, and so should be applauded.

jgw1 · 24/12/2023 14:40

At least Cleverly has a sense of humour, look at Starmer and Cooper, they wouldn't know a joke if it was sat opposite them in the House of Commons.

@jgw1

Your posts make no sense!

You've said upthread ‘aren’t jokes meant to be funny’ obviously implying this one clearly isn’t. Then followed with ‘at least he had a sense of humour’

I wouldn’t have thought having a sense of humour is high up on the list of priorities people have when choosing who to vote for.

You might not think that, but people voted for Boris Johnson instead of But Jeremy Corbyn.

If only Cleverly was leader of the Tories they would win against Starmer in a smilar manner.

IClaudine · 24/12/2023 15:36

You are outdoing yourself today jgw1! Have a good Christmas Xmas Grin

thisfilmisboring · 24/12/2023 15:42

@jgw1

So you do think jokes about date rape are funny then?

OK then.
