Where can I get DD measured for a proper bra?

GCWorkNightmare · 30/06/2023 23:15

DD is 12, nearly 13. I’m a J cup so she was always likely to have big boobs. She’s been wearing quite heavy duty sports bras till now (since she was about 9) but she’s started complaining that they aren’t comfortable anymore. It wouldn’t surprise me if she’s a DD cup by now.

My mum took me to M+S but I’ve been boycotting them for years. I get my bras online from Bravissimo and they feel a bit grown up for a teen who would rather hide them than go for lacy whatevers.

I really don’t want to be exposing her to anywhere where it may be a biologically male assistant helping/measuring her, nor do I want her in unisex changing rooms.

so, where do we go?

This is a bit of an 'out there' suggestion but my mum had breast cancer twice, and she got amoena bras. There are some similarities in their bras and ones for teenagers, ie not wired, cover the breast fully (you don't want a prosthetic popping out).

The retailers that sell them are not always shops, sometimes it is someone running a bra fitting service from home.

The next bras came. Sadly even the cups of the 32E weren’t big enough and they don’t do an F cup.

back to the drawing board. <sigh>

Do you have a Bravissimo nearby @GCWorkNightmare ?@GCWorkNightmare ? I would take her there for a fitting. They might have some plainer styles aimed at younger girls. Even if they don't, you don't have to buy anything. You can just get an accurate fitting and some ideas about styles that might work. Then you can hunt around on Brastop and Belle Lingerie and other discount online stores to find something that suits.

Freya are pretty good. Band size down to a 28 and there are lots of very plain styles.

I’ve said several times that I’m a long time Bravissimo customer. There is one in Cardiff but as I’m working away this week I can’t get her there in time before her school residential trip this weekend.

I tried it and hated it. I’m not sure it would have enough coverage for DD, who is very self conscious about nipples being visible. But right now I’ll order anything that might fit her.

Sorry, that was re the bravissimo soft cup bra.

Or something like this OP? https://www.belle-lingerie.co.uk/pour-moi-love-to-lounge-non-wired-bra/
It comes in 32F and looks soft and not too sexy.

Ooh, could work.

I cant believe no one has suggested Brastop!
It is an online shop that sells all sorts of brands and sizes! It puts bravissimo in a corner, and it ALWAYS has a sale on! I havent paid dull price for a bra or bikini in AGES!

However, OP... You have big boobs, so you know how it is. CHEAP is not something we can find! Its not like we can go to Primark and buy a bra for 2p!

I've bought GG/H cup non-wired bras from Next in the last year. Albeit with a bigger band. Unless they don't do the smaller bands in DD+ maybe try searching again?

GCWorkNightmare · 06/07/2023 14:20

The Pour Moi bras from Next came up trumps. She got quite excited by the one with a little bit of lace, bless her. Made me realise (again) how quickly she’s growing up.

Glad you found something she likes OP.

GCWorkNightmare · 07/07/2023 11:08

Thanks. They don’t have a small enough back by the looks but will bear in mind in future.

expensive but i liked how i was measured at Rigby & Peller. Nobody was in the room with me, nobody touched me without permission and despite that the bras fitted perfectly.

But. It may be a good idea just to go in to a good quality bra shop with her, or look for good information online, about how to tell if your bra fits you properly. And then only use your "size" as a guideline, but try on several different ones. in several different styles.

Brefugee · 14/07/2023 14:23

have now read all your posts, OP:

I understand that you don't want to fork out a lot of money for a teenagers bra but frankly, it is an investment worth doing. Save up and get one, then save up and get another. Meanwhile handwashing the good one you have to preserve it longer.

I pay EUR 100 for each bra because i want good comfortable ones (38H). I get that it's not affordable for everyone, and it's a pity you won't use M&S because i've got some good ones in there in the past.

What are you calling a "teenage bra" though? non underwired? t-shirt style? given you're still searching, i think your DD and you need to widen your parameters.

GCWorkNightmare · 14/07/2023 20:43

Thanks but you clearly didn’t read all of my posts because we’re sorted now.

I spend upwards of £40 each on my bras and hand wash them. As a 34J myself know exactly how important a well fitting bra is.

She’s in Pour Moi non-wired padded t-shirt type bras and very happy with them. £24 each but I don’t think that’s too bad.

I went to John Lewis this week, really excellent service, much better than M&S

Part-time bra fitter in MandS many years ago, and I think you need to consider underwired or at least structured bras, her cup size needs something more supportive than a bralet. My daughter was fine in them when she was an A and B cup, but as a C cup she's moved to underwired for support.

I wasn't aware of any link between underwired bras and breast cancer, maybe do some research, the underwriting in my own bras don't press on my breasts at all, they just hold them in place. I always wear balcony type - from mybra fitter days I found they suited nearly all breast types, by providing support as breasts just sit in the cups, aren't squashed or pushed together.

And you need to go to a lingering shop or section of a department store to ideally get fitted, but at least to try lots on - even if fitted she needs to try lots of sizes - a 28E bust may be more comfortable in a 30 DD for example.

Good luck!

Already sorted. The perfect bras came from Pour Moi in the end.

The cancer advice came from an eminent ONCOLOGIST specialising in breast cancer that I worked with for several years.

I see you are sorted for now, but I do recommend the JL in Cardiff for measuring, and lots of styles to try on. DD is 17, we go in there for her and they do a good job. Plenty of very plain, moulded unwired ones as well as others. The Bravissimo ladies across the way see a lot more of me that I would like too!

chipshopElvis · 22/07/2023 11:06

My DD is 12. I measure her using the boob and bust guide and then order a few from Next we send back the ones that are no good but it's been pretty accurate.
