Brighton Feminists and Standing For Women

Brighton Women's Liberation Collective have issued a statement in advance of Standing For Women coming to Brighton.

I think that there's room for all different kinds of activism and different campaigners (including those who don't call themselves feminist) have different strengths and attract interest and support from different women.

It's a shame when women focus on what separates us rather than what we have in common.

Good call.

WearyLady · 18/09/2022 08:56

A very fair statement which thoughtfully describes their stance.

1994girl · 18/09/2022 08:57

Who cares?

A very fair statement which thoughtfully describes their stance.

If you click on the link in their statement, it lists their "concerns" about KJK. It's essentially an attack piece, smearing a woman who has done a huge amount to raise awareness and to empower other women.

It's a good statement. If they are open to respectful debate/discussion, then perhaps if it's pointed out that they've linked to a piece that has inaccuracies, they may reconsider.

Kellie-Jay has just released a short video about criticism of the event from feminists- about who was speaking for example?
She didn't say if it was Twitter or reports from somewhere else.
Does anyone know what this is about please?

FKATondelayo · 21/09/2022 16:09

As feminists, we stand firmly against all forms of domination and oppression; we oppose racism, exploitation of workers and the earth, and unlawful discrimination against all groups protected by the Equality Act.

"Let's put everyone's needs ahead of women's". Standard lib fem stuff.

DameMaud · 21/09/2022 16:14

Thanks @FKATondelayo where was this from please?
Sorry, I'm between this and the sex and gender thread and getting confused!

FKATondelayo · 21/09/2022 17:27

It's on the OP's link:

Maybe, but when you get down ti brass tacks this is just what Julie Bindle said when she said that for her feminism was totally wedded to being a leftist - and she wants it to be seen that way generally. That is, in her mind, and that of many others, it's totally part of a larger package of busting up hierarchies and social justice.

If someone really believes that SJ including feminism are all part of the same thing, it makes sense to make a statement like that. And expect feminists to be on the same page about a lot of other SJ causes.

Good. I’m with BWLC.

Oh and the concerns link goes direct to copies of posts KJK where has written her views and videos KJK where has said her views and eyewitness reports and so on. It’s not a smear campaign if it’s true. Which it is.

Hindsightin · 10/10/2022 01:28

What did she say about Muslim communities?

I can’t get the links in the Wordpress post to work.

She said, as many others have, that there are concerns about the freedom of women (protests in Iran, anyone?), and that the Rotherham child abuse scandal was hampered by fear of accusations of racism (which enquiries have confirmed was the case).

So nothing particularly controversial. These are conversations that need to be had. I can't tell you whether KJK has more unconscious biases than the rest of us- for we all have them. I can't tell you if she's racist- I've never met her and am not qualified to comment.

The things she has said are things she is allowed to say, that need to be said, if we are to discuss the rights and safeguarding of women and girls.

Hindsightin · 10/10/2022 09:19

Yes i managed to access her comments

her comments that they’ve copied don’t seem outrageous to me - eg concerns about schoolgirls wearing the hijab - I do wonder when the woke line on that will flip

“Concerns” is so minimising.

A class of 7 year olds just walked past only 2/15 girls weren't wearing hijab. #ffs #disgusting #islam #sexist #eastonprimarysortitout

For Fucks Sake
Disgusting
Sort it Out

Bit more than “concerns” about hijabs.

So you think her posting this was a-ok?

we say the way men socialised results in certain behaviour but not Muslim men and how they feel about white girls? - Posie Parker

Hindsightin · 10/10/2022 11:58

@Discovereads i think hijabs are abhorrent 🤷‍♀️

Hindsightin · 10/10/2022 12:00

Should have read making schoolgirls wear hijabs

picklemewalnuts · 10/10/2022 12:05

If I find the situation in Iran is disgusting, am I allowed to comment on that?
If a school enforced a uniform requirement on only girls that impacted their freedom to access the curriculum, could I say that was abhorrent? Why is it ok for the parents to do that?

I also think it disgusting to pierce babies' ears and remove boy's foreskins for non medical reasons. Am I allowed to say that?
If I am, why can't I say similar about hijab?

Hindsightin · 10/10/2022 12:08

Indeed.

in the same way that western religions have been used by men to repress women so Islam can be used by men to repress women. It’s hardly a surprise.

the rights of women and girls are always sacrificed by the woke on the altar of cultural relativism.

girls rights are human rights.

Discovereads · 10/10/2022 12:40

Except apparently to you lot women/girls have no right to wear a hijab because you think they are abhorrent.

Otherwise why are you applauding PP for trying to impose her (xenophobic) beliefs on other parents?

Hindsightin · 10/10/2022 12:43

@Discovereads is your head exploding watching the news from Iran?

Hindsightin · 10/10/2022 12:45

@Discovereads and there is a difference between outlawing wearing the hijab and making girls and women wear it.

Iran is showing that the vast majority of women don’t want to wear it when given the choice - so if all or a large majority are wearing it does somewhat suggest that they are being coerced to
