A Tory MP has linked young men turning to crime to women playing traditionally male roles in TV and film.

Nick Fletcher said "female replacements" in shows like Doctor Who were robbing boys of good role models.

The only characters they had to look up to were gangsters the Krays and Tommy Shelby from Peaky Blinders, he said.

"Is there any wonder we are seeing so many young men committing crime?," he told MPs taking part in a debate on International Men's Day.

This must be why there was a massive female-driven crimewave all the way from the beginning of recorded history up until about ten years ago, when we started getting role models.

The Daily Mash doesn't really need to write itself today, does it?

OldTurtleNewShell · 25/11/2021 17:33

A friend just sent me a link to that. Can't stop laughing

corlan · 25/11/2021 17:36

He's got a fair point. I've only really thought about becoming a Time Lord since seeing that a woman can do the job just as well as a man.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 25/11/2021 17:36

I never knew Jodie Whittaker was that powerful.

A new way to blame women for everything!

Sparklfairy · 25/11/2021 17:40

This sounds like a sort of "set the world to rights" ramble scribbled on the back of a beer mat in the pub after a few too many with "the lads".

PerkingFaintly · 25/11/2021 17:55

I'm laughing so hard I'm struggling to type.

I mean, it's not funny, but.... PAHAHAHAH!

PerkingFaintly · 25/11/2021 17:58

I mean, what's this guy watching that has no good blokes in?

Or do we think a telly about, say, rooting out corruption to the letter of the law, the letter, isn't quite a Tory MP's cup of tea?

No not that one! It's got a woman in it and she's actually quite competent and never has to be rescued by a man.

@PerkingFaintly ... only just got your point, I am slow today Grin

The repeats of New Tricks are good, Nick, it's all right, it's ok, Nick, listen to what I say, Nick, oh no, hang on, Sandra Pullman's a bloody bird innit? Don't want to listen to her, she'll make me get violent.

PerkingFaintly · 25/11/2021 18:07

Right first time as well, though, JesusInTheCabbageVan.

Main characters are two blokes and one woman: "Oh my god the women are taking over!!!!"

It's funny because when men complain they 'feel left out' because 'everyone' (aka, literally a tiny % of leads but a slight increase on before) is played by women and/or people of colour, they ought to maybe ought to develop some empathy with how women and people of colour have felt/are still feeling since... forever? Maybe imagine what it might be like for people who don't see themselves represented everywhere?

Plus I would hazard that very few young, male deliquents are Doctor Who fans.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 25/11/2021 18:11

It’s hysterical. Someone on Twitter said wait till he hears who replaced Ted Heath Grin

It's actually really sad, though.

This was a debate marking International Men's Day, and he could have made very reasonable and serious points about male mental health, and indeed about poor male role models some of his parliamentary colleagues.

But no. It's women's fault. For replacing men.

Women getting a bite at the big screen roles is only being demanded by a tiny minority, though, sez he.Hmm Wotta relief.HmmHmm

MarshmallowSwede · 25/11/2021 18:26

Women didn’t have a lot of role models on tv, yet somehow women were not turning to crime. Amazing isn’t it?

The fragile male ego makes me really wonder how they even managed to be in charge of things. Their ego is hurt by literally every single thing that does not centre them! It’s so annoying and pathetic.

So all strong role models must be men or we will have roving gangs of youngsters and feral men running around.

It gets harder and harder for me to not want to have a curfew for them and wonder why we haven’t resorted to locking them in cages! I’m married to a man, so clearly I love at least one man. But this constant need to pander to them and coddle their feelings.. goodness it’s exhausting.

Cattitudes · 25/11/2021 18:29

Not true that there are no male role models left. What about Daddy Pig?

HelplesslyHoping · 25/11/2021 18:30

Yet another reason to hate the Tories, and another to stop following BBC news. Nick clearly needs to work on his fragile masculinity. Poor little lad :(

Jodie Whittaker was trending on twitter earlier.

Don't quite get the comment about BBC News?

They reported Nick Fletcher MP saying it, but did not endorse his words

Their report very swiftly moves on to:

"His comments were met with surprise by Labour Party chair Anneliese Dodds, who said she thought she had "misheard" him. The reason boys turned to a life of crime was "far more complex" than "who should be the next 007", she added."

Findwen · 25/11/2021 20:10

There is a trend of replacing men with women in popular older franchises (Terminator, Star Wars, Dr Who, Ghostbusters, James Bond, Oceans and others already changed or in development now) - I think it is a poor choice.

It doesn't make the fans the originals very happy and women don't tend to flock to the new replacement since the original underlying themes were not orientated to resonate with a female audience. It's just lazy, cheap and makes few life long fans of the mangled changes. If you disagree, can you honestly name any of the gender flipped stories that will hold a place popular culture for a few decades ?

Rather than replace men with women in established stories, women should get their own entirely new stories - not be passed mens hand-me-downs and told it's feminist and empowering.

Deliriumoftheendless · 25/11/2021 20:28

Doctor Who stole his TARDIS which is against the law on this planet so he’s probably responsible for masses of crime anyway.
