Feminism: chat
Feminist artists and crafters

Thought it might be a good idea to share some of our favourite artists, especially those with a feminist slant.
It would be nice to see a mix of historical or more famous artists and also lesser known ones who might benefit from some sales (I know I'm looking for some new artwork for my walls).
I'll start.
Obviously Jess de Wahls embroidery is just incredible - www.jessdewahls.com/
I also love artists like Jenny Saville - en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenny_Saville
Judy Chicago's Dinner Party is an incredible celebration of women - en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dinner_Party
I also love the beautiful mixed media vulva paintings of Jacqueline Secor - instagram.com/jacquiejoeart?utm_medium=copy_link

I had to mention Sandy Brown because she's in the news today. She wants to celebrate being female

All prints by the Balbusso Twins (Anna + Elena) are amazing, but especially the Handmaid's Tale collection

@Bunshaped
And it's uplifting to see new pieces of art every day.
I love that account! Always finding wonderful new art I'd never seen before

There are two fascinating London exhibitions this summer focusing on the female body (and all its "mounds and valleys and caves and holes" )

Sorry, I don't think you can access the article from the above link without a subscription.
However, if you type
How women artists reclaimed the female body
into Google then it lists the FT site and the article is available to read.

Here's a really apposite blog post from her about her experiences of cancel culture:

Henny Beaumont is painting portraits of all 118 women killed by men in one year 2020/21, and in doing so is raising money for the Centre for Women’s Justice (founded by radfem lawyer Harriet Wistrich)

So glad you posted this link Bunshaped! We know that most of the famous sculptors are men and that the talent of women like Barbara Hepworth has been under appreciated. A woman doing a sculpture of a woman will begin to redress the balance.

Very true, nettie434. For anyone who can get to Wakefield, there is this:
"To mark The Hepworth Wakefield’s 10th anniversary, the gallery has organised the largest exhibition of Barbara Hepworth’s work – taking place across all ten gallery spaces – since the artist’s death in 1975."

I'm thinking of going, might see some of you there!

Historical:
The Glasgow Girls: www.nationalgalleries.org/art-and-artists/glossary-terms/glasgow-girls.
In particular Margaret MacDonald MacIntosh whose work has not been given the same level of recognition as that of husband Charles Rennie MacIntosh. Why not? Look at this beautiful embroidered panel.
Among the Glasgow Girls Ann MacBeth designed suffragette banners, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ann_Macbeth. I think she would have wholeheartedly approved of Jess De Wahls.
Current favourites of mine.
