englishheadline.com/primary-schools-tell-girls-aged-four-to-wear-modesty-shorts-amid-accusations-of-body-shaming-englishheadline/

For the fucking love of god ... words fail me

Simon Bailey, chief constable of Norfolk and the National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for child protection, has lent his support to the idea of wearing modesty shorts

Hey Simon maybe women should wear chastity belts when they hit puberty, that would bring down rape numbers.

The lead for child protection and this is the best he comes up with.

Ffs

They make kids wear impractical school uniforms , half decent underwear for girls is really hard to come by sometimes then we body shame them and victim blame them for the inevitable results.

The only school trousers that don't have yards of excess material around the arse and ankles are the skinny trousers which most schools ban. Most school trousers probably haven't seen a female child in decades I've list count if how many lairds both my dds have tried on.

The only underwear that is remotely any good is the shorts which for obvious reasons isn't always suitable for older girls.

Either we scrap uniform so the poor buggers can just wear tracks suits or sports leggings or jeans or whatever they can he comfortable akd active in. Or we startd demanding uniform.ve a bit nore adaptive amd stop banning the one item.that might actually fit.

And perhaoss the manufacturers can actually design something that fits normal children and pants that do the job.

None of that's.in a 4 year old school girls control so stop bloody blaming her for perverts who can't behave Angry

GlamGiraffe · 06/06/2021 23:09

Pure insanity.
Impose something on the masses because of a minority of disgusting perverts.
How about doing something about the males instead. And while we are at it lets fit all men's trousers and pants with padlocks....seems equivalent logic.

Quaggars · 07/06/2021 00:38

Ugh.
No.
Where does that end?
You shouldn't have to bloody cover up fgs

Fallingirl · 07/06/2021 01:09

Does anyone actually believe men perving over young girls will decline if girls wear shorts? I can see individual parents choosing shorts for their daughter, in the hope the predators choose the next girl instead, but if all girls then wear shorts, will we have solved the issue of pervy child abusing men, or will the men just perve over girls in shorts?

The stupid is strong in this one.

Exactly Doesn't matter what you wear, they'll do it anyway. Be damned if I'm going to start worrying what I'm wearing, lest the men can't control themselves Hmm
NiceGerbil · 07/06/2021 02:15

I mean it's just such bollocks.

Re the comment below.

  1. How does telling girls they need to wear two pairs of knickers make them feel more secure? What a bizarre thing to say
  2. Is this a problem with other students? Then they need to be dealt with. Don't most schools have separate playgrounds for the teenies and the older primary kids though?
  3. If it's adult men perving at them in the playground. Isn't the proper response that a member of staff tells them to fuck off? And if they don't go, or keep coming back, or the school doesn't feel comfy approaching him. Then to call the police and they will deal with him?!!!

I mean what the fuck?!

'Simon Bailey, who leads the National Police Chiefs’ Council on child protection, has backed primary schools advising young girls to wear shorts under their skirts

Speaking to The Sunday Times, he said: ‘My view is that anything that can be done to ensure that young girls feel more secure has got to be good news, even modesty shorts, but the culture in schools has got to change at the same time.’ '

MoiraQueen · 07/06/2021 04:54

My DD who is now an older teen wore cotton cycle shorts under her gingham dresses, it was her choice. She's been to a few primary schools, all allowed the girls to wear ordinary shorts, but she loved the gingham dresses (and still feels nostalgic about them). I did one year find gingham culottes which she loved and she almost always wore grey/black culottes, never trousers in winter at the schools which had a uniform and leggings/jeans at the school with no uniform.

Winkywonkydonkey · 07/06/2021 05:09

I'm torn on this because I agree it's not the responsibility of the child to deter perverts but my DC also cycle to school and a summer dress (which they love to wear) isn't very practical for that so we do pop on a pair of shorts.

I also find knickers DON'T cover everything, they often gape and I struggle to find short style ones in their sizes. Boys generally seem to have thicker, larger underwear choices, but my DC would refuse to wear them of they didn't have the required level of unicorn/Disney crap

^ I haven’t had enough caffeine yet but this is exactly what I want to say. Spot on. I generally fear for the future of my DD (9m) with this insanity. We’re heading straight into Gilliad. Vile victim blaming of innocent children and I presume their female guardians for not making sure they are more modest.

TheQueef · 07/06/2021 06:32

Anyone around long enough to have worn gym knickers?
We've already tried 'modesty short's under the guise of gym knickers in the 60's & 70's.
Spoiler - it doesn't work it just creates another excuse.

CoffeeWithCheese · 07/06/2021 06:46

I'd love to find some gingham blouse and skort/short sets (I don't like the playsuits for obvious toilet dash related reasons) but nowhere seems to have capitalised on that market niche and mine don't want to wear school trouser type "shorts" as pretty much all the girls go into gingham as soon as they can.

I don't give a shit about knicker flashing but the boys in DD1's class are horrendously out of control after lockdowns and I think the comments will start soon and I don't want to subject the kids to sweaty shorts under dresses all summer whenever DD1 raises the point.

My kids do like "boy-short" (hate the name) style knickers anyway to stop them disappearing up their arse crack - they just find them more comfortable. I refuse to buy anything named "modesty" stuff - just on principle (I do kind of like the name cartwheel shorts though)

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/06/2021 06:47

I was at primary in the 80s we had those blue pe knickers. But they weren't under anything we just had to wear them on their own.

It obviously wasn't a health and safety/practical thing cos well the boys wore shorts.

Seems we just keep putting girls in these situations don't we.

Force them into clothing that barely covers anything then its their fault the men can't control themselves.

Given no one fixed the holes in the swim shed so the boys could carry on.leering through at the girls getting changed, when there's a chance to actually do something protect girls no ones interested.

Funny that

Bordois · 07/06/2021 07:08

Sorry to come across flippant, but I dont think a paedo is going to be "turned off" by a little girl wearing knickers that cover a bit more of her body.

Its not the clothes, or the children wearing them, that are the issue.

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/06/2021 07:20

Statistically the predetor is far more likely to be someone they know anyway surely?

Thats not to say there aren't strangers lurking at bus stops etc and we of course should be prepared for that worse case scenario perhaps patrolling and trying to keep people safe instead of scrolling through twitter for tweets and phoning women who be believe in biology after all there's time and staff for that it seems but a police officer should surely know the real danger usually starts at home?

Makes them look thick tbh

Feelinghothothottoday · 07/06/2021 07:44

Have you complained to the school? This is not acceptable and the boys and their parents need dealing with. I would be appalled if I knew my son was behaving like this. But I assume he isn’t as he is my son. But these boys at your child’s school are also sons and their parents need to be told so that they can stop this behaviour before they become teenage boys.

Feelinghothothottoday · 07/06/2021 07:47

Only the other day I read about about a man that had 100,000s of indecent images on his pc including babies. Yet he got 4 years suspended sentence. Perhaps this policeman needs to be raising this instead.

LemonRoses · 07/06/2021 08:06

@Clymene

If there are paedos hanging around the school playground, hoping to catch sight of a 4 year olds's knickers, you patrol the fences and arrest the perverts surely? Confused
This exactly. Grow decent hedges around school perimeters.
Haudyourwheesht · 07/06/2021 08:19

This is ridiculous. My DD would ask me why she was wearing 2 pairs of pants and I certainly have no intention of telling her that dirty old men might want to look at her knickers. Plus, as a pp mentioned, they'll just get their kicks peeping at their 'modesty shorts'.

Mumsnut · 07/06/2021 08:45

In my primary days (late 60s), knickers were knickers. Mine were indestructible, navy blue and had been passed down from two sisters beforehand. I cartwheeled with confidence

Nowadays, they are scanty , thin, and very narrow in the gusset

Sturdy, cotton short-shape knicks are the answer, not to act as modesty garments but just to act as proper pants

ChattyLion · 07/06/2021 10:22

This gives me the absolute rage.
When will grown ups actually stand up for girls?

Bergamotte · 07/06/2021 10:32

"This exactly. Grow decent hedges around school perimeters."

Yes! Might also help reduce levels of air pollution in the playground, and could be used for nature study in the younger classes. Much better than just deciding it's fine for predators to hang around staring through the fence.

Defaultname · 07/06/2021 10:50

I suppose the only girl in class not to wear them will be noted as having "a lack of modesty shorts"?

Winkywonkydonkey · 07/06/2021 11:25

My DD went off to school today in cycling shorts, but then we realised her bike had a puncture so we came home. I told her she can take off the shorts as we were driving now and she told me that she'd rather not because if she wears them she can sit down without her friends telling her off for showing her knickers. So they are self-policing now (Yet she also told me that a lot of the boys have been flashing the class) So she now feels very self conscious of the whole thing and will be hot all summer wearing double the clothes. She's 5 ffs!

Gottalife · 07/06/2021 11:27

@Goldensyrupissticky

I would say that this has become more common in last few years, certainly in my small area of the world. I had a conversation/ complaint from a mother that other children had commented on ‘her daughter’s modesty shorts.’ ( the mother’s terminology not mine) when changing for PE and she didn’t want to wear them.

Now, quite a few of the younger girls wear them, not all. A pity as it gives them no more freedom to climb as they still wear skirts. I can understand older girls perhaps wanting to wear when they are climbing or tumbling outside as other kids can make daft remarks.

Personally, I feel shorts and trousers give children more freedom to play but such a shame that these shorts are being linked with preventing sexualised behaviour. Again, why is the onus on girls to prevent inappropriate behaviour? These are tiny little girls.

In all my life I only remember one girl removing her underwear to perform handstands, aged about 8. I often wonder why she did this? These days this would raise huge alarm bells.

I am old enough to remember the navy blue knickers that were actually a part of the school uniform. They doubled as p.e. shorts. Brilliant idea. Handstands in the playground ? No problem.
