Periods and the covid vaccine

I just saw this - apologies if it's been posted before.

'Scientists launch study to find out if COVID-19 vaccines are causing period changes after hundreds of women notice irregularities'

Also US based, so perhaps won't apply here, but still may be of interest.

www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-9495727/Researchers-studying-women-report-changes-periods-taking-COVID-vaccine.html

The comments are veering into some pretty wild conspiracy theories, but I found it really interesting that there is potentially an impact on periods - especially after learning about immunity and oestrogen, etc.

Some very complex interactions, perhaps?

I've had one dose of Moderna. My cycle was unusually long (did a pregnancy test) now it's here and it's lasting far longer than normal. I've not had it for so long before.

ArabellaScott · 18/06/2021 11:12

@BaronessWrongCrowd

I didn’t really think about this. Had the Pfizer jab my first period was three days late the next 4 days early. I am in my 40’s so could be to do with that
There are lots of reasons cycles can be disrupted, yep. It's usually my first freakout idea - must be perimenopause!

So I just had a doctors appointment to get checked out and mentioned the potential covid vaccine link - or rather that a lot of women were questioning a link - and she agreed with me that it would only become really obvious as we work down the age groups.
Obviously elderly and other post-menopausal women are unaffected.
Women in their late 40s and 50s might have it put it down to peri-menopause but younger than that it would be seen as abnormal.

WoolOfBat · 21/06/2021 14:12

I am concerned about this. I believe that my periods were affected due to the vaccine but my GP didn’t ask any questions about vaccine, just sent me for a blood test.

Do we know if they record sex or gender on side effects? I think this is really important data and I am concerned that it will be muddled up. There is too little research on this as it is.

ArabellaScott · 21/06/2021 14:27

why is this showing in 'feminist chat' section? This is related to sex, (and gender) as vaccine effects are affecting different sexes differently. That is the whole and entire point of the thread.

OP posts:
WoolOfBat · 21/06/2021 14:44

I think that is a very good point Arabella. I think also that it is a concern if data is recorded based on gender and not on sex.

If the data on side-effects is based on gender, I worry that this will underestimate the potential effects. Transwomen will not see any impact as they don’t have periods.

As for transmen, I am not sure how their periods are given the medication they take. It would be worth a special study to see the impact on transmen.

ArabellaScott · 21/06/2021 14:46

I've reported and asked for it to be moved. Yes, your point about gender/sex is totally pertinent, as well. I remember the zoe covid app recorded by 'gender' after it was targeted by genderists.

I do worry about the data being unreliable on this. It does seems like it is some kind of interplay between hormone levels and the vaccine. I think it would make sense to separate studies on men, transmen, women and transwomen. The hormone levels for transwomen and transmen are quite different from the hormone levels of biological men and women. I believe that certain medical risks are vastly higher (about 3x) for certain illnesses like heart issues and blood clots.

If we are talking about a vaccine which may have an impact on or interplay with hormone levels, it is crucial to get the right underlying data for this.

Ravenclawsome · 21/06/2021 15:10

Apparently the yellow card scheme data is backing up a correlation

WoolOfBat · 21/06/2021 15:11

Raven, is that based on gender or based on sex?

doodlejump1980 · 21/06/2021 15:13

I had AZ on the 3rd of May. My period started on 20th May and HAS NOT STOPPED. Today is day 33. 😡😡😡😡

WoolOfBat · 21/06/2021 15:18

Doodle, did you report this somewhere?

I wonder how many of the initial tests with the vaccine was made on women and how many was made on men. Most vaccines are tested on men I think (as the fluctuating hormone levels of women complicates things) and I think that is outrageous in this day and age.

doodle, that sounds alarming. Have you contacted your GP?

Meanwhile, just pointing out that only females with xx chromosomes are going to be affected by this issue. No transwoman has ever had any effect on their cycle, because they don't have menstrual cycles.

Just came on to say that I think this needs to be reported and moved to the Sex/Gender topic.

It is assuming that this is a feminist issue. But that assumes that feminism is based on women as a biological class.

Not only women get periods - tsk tsk.

ArabellaScott · 21/06/2021 16:52

I have done that, FFS. MN have so far not moved it, I am baffled as to what actually is going to go in the new, shiny 'feminist chat'.

FFSFFSFFS · 21/06/2021 17:02

Perhaps talk of the accessorising needs of menopausal women?

doodlejump1980 · 21/06/2021 18:41

@ArabellaScott yeah. Doc is a bit useless. Suggested it might be vaccine related. They thought it was more to do with a reaction to my pill and gave me a different pill to try and transexamic acid (sp?) to get it to stop, but I’m more of a “let nature take it’s course” kinda girl. I’m exhausted.
Where do you officially report reactions to the vaccine? Got my second jag next Friday.

I'm so sorry. Have you been taking iron? I use Spatone, it's gentler on the tummy.

OP posts:
ArabellaScott · 21/06/2021 18:47
  • meant to say, if I'm low on iron my periods seem to be heavier. And if you've been bleeding that long you are quite likely to be low.

WeirdAndPissedOff · 21/06/2021 20:58

Hmm, I had Pfizer 2 weeks ago, no changes to cycle (I think) but heavier cramps and whole groin hurts (underlying bone/muscle around pubic feels tender/bruised).
Is this likely to be a side effect, or unrelated?

Also, since I'm here, anyone know if this is a "normal" period symptom? Blush

Onynx · 21/06/2021 22:19

I had my first Pfizer on day 2 of my period- it stopped dead on day 3 but I still had all the cramping, severe migraine and really nauseous feeling for a full wk after. My periods have always been like clockwork, almost to the hour before this 🤷🏻‍♀️

WarriorN · 21/06/2021 22:27

First vaccine on day if period. Had one exactly 28 days later (which is actually unusual for me!, usually 25-27).

Had second vaccine today, 8 weeks exactly after first, still waiting for my next period...! Don't feel the least bit premenstrual either.

MsFogi · 21/06/2021 22:28

This is why I would be so worried if they roll the vaccine out for teenagers - I don't want my dds having it before we understand the potential impacts on the reproductive system.
