What happens if you are completely truthful with your GP?

I have read a couple of threads on here about it being a positive thing to be 100% truthful with your GP. It can get you 'proper' treatment/medication/whatever.

But if i tell my GP exactly how i feel, what is next for me? for my children? for my family?

I am talking wrt self harm, eating "issues". self esteem, depression, suicidal thoughts.

Your gp is interesting in treating you to the best of their abilities. They can only do this if you are completely honest with them otherwise they do not have all the information to act on.

They are not usually interested in involving your children or family. That would only happen if they beleived there was a significant and immediate risk of harm to your children. Self harming wouldn't come under that in most cases or suicidal thoughts.

I thought when I went to doctors that they would take my ds away from me because of my mental problems. THey didn't - they didn't see any risk to the child. A lot of people are convinced if htey have mental health problems then social services will be informed immediately, but that is not the case.

If you have dh/dp the only time the doctor would be interested in seeing them is if you were incapable of making decisions or communicating with them.

Bear in mind that I went in the middle of a paranoid attack barely able to talk or make sense and they still dealt with me rather than my dh (though it took a while). The only time they brought him in was to translate and see if he could calm me down.

What should happen is that they give you medication adn support.

TheArmadillo is right. A few months back we had a long and emotive thread about the fear of social services getting involved if you admit how you are feeling and what came out of there is that it is never the GPs who refer to SS.

An to be there for you kids at some point you will need to take the risk so you can get better.

From my own personal experience eating issues an sh (I consider my ed self harming too just no blood, but I have used other 'techniques' too) are coping strategies and not the main problem. Unless you are dangerously underweight ed can wait until counselling. Go talk to GP about depression and self esteem and do mention the suicidal thoughts.

SagacityNell · 03/07/2010 14:09

Who is it that refers to SS? WHat if i was admitted? what happens then?(i am not a lone parent)and what happens when you are admitted? and what does it take to g ha far?

SOrry, lots of questions. I do have a RL person i could ask but she is not around.

It seemed that most SS referrals were made by meddling do-gooders, not health professionals...

You're only admitted if the risk you pose to yourself or others can really not be managed in the community. Which it usually can.

You are much more likely to be given ads, referred for counselling, possibly referred to a Mental Health Team/a CPN

Sidge · 03/07/2010 14:15

GPs can and do refer to SS, but less often than other agencies such as CPNs, psychiatrists, HVs, police etc.

I think full disclosure to a GP is best as they are then able to do a fuller assessment as to the most appropriate treatment and intervention.

TheArmadillo · 03/07/2010 14:15

you would not be admitted unless you were really really bad and then it would be something discussed with you beforehand. YOu would have to give your agreement unless you were sectioned, which is not easy to do. It requires the agreemnet of 2 doctors and your next of kin I think, plus usually police involvement. Is not an easy or immediate thing to happen.

In patient places are extremely limited so unlikely this would happen (usually is people fighting to get someone admitted in very extreme circumstances).

Anyone can make a referral to SS - or at least raise concerns about a child. BUt it is extremely unlikely that this will happen.

Am also a self-harmer who was putting my unborn child at risk but still no referral. ANd I have an older child as well.

It is the exception rather than the rule that this would happen.

SagacityNell · 03/07/2010 14:18

I am already on ADs(not working, trying to get an appt) and been offered CBT but i don't want it.

What does a CPN do? (community psychiatric nurse?)

DH doesn't 'do' mental health. Admitting i was low enough to need ADs was bloody hard work. He takes the piss out of anyone with MH problems and everyone should be "in the nut house" with all the other "freaks".

I'm sorry you're in such a bad place. As others have said, getting admitted takes a lot - it has to be a real last-ditch option.

Why don't you want CBT? Many people find it really does help.

SagacityNell · 03/07/2010 17:49

But what will it do? I did an online CBT thing (moodgym) and it just made me feel stupid tbh.

cantbelievewhatijustdid · 03/07/2010 17:51

Many people find it helps them cope better with their thoughts, and thereby lifts their mood. It never helped me either though, I'll be honest.

Keziahhopes · 05/07/2010 00:07

Hi - why not go to the first CBT session .. talking with a real person is meant to be very different to on-line things. And it can be hard to get offered things like that, so seems like your dr trying to help you - and if it now work you can tell him that and ask for something else?

It is not something I have had CBT but it is meant to be helpful.

SagacityNell · 05/07/2010 11:51

Well i was referred for "urgent" ED related counselling a year ago and still not heard back so i won't be waiting with baited breath or anything.

I have nothing i particularly want to chat to a stranger about face to face. I know that negative thoughts breed negative thoughts and i know negative things lead to negative things.

Sorry not meaning to rant. Struggling to see the point in anything at all today.

At least you could see a locum. i have tried twice today and i can't book with the GP who gave me the meds until 11th July in which time i will have run out. Receptionist can't authorise a repeat because i need to physically see a DR for the first few months of ADs and i can't make an urgent appt because there are none left!

SOrry you feel like this too willthisend

No please stay. Maybe you could type out what you are feeling here? WOuld it help you?

OP posts:
Keziahhopes · 05/07/2010 20:41

Hi SagacityNell you can ask for an apt with any dr to get prescription, and book the earliest one you can for the one you want to talk to. Not ideal, but they have to be able to see you when you need meds if they will not give you a repeat.

Failing that you can get an apt with out of hours dr - telling them you need urgently a prescription and your gp centre WILL NOT see you and why!!

SagacityNell · 05/07/2010 20:52

Keziah - i did consider OOH or walk in but come to the conclusion that there is little point. plus i dn't want to take the place of someone urgently needing seeing like a small child.

OP posts:
Keziahhopes · 05/07/2010 21:21

Hey - it is urgent you have your continuity of medication, as missing doses can cause side effects or reduce the benefits of your treatment.

When I was last at OOH, I was only one there - and they tend to put small children first. They are open all night - you do matter!

SagacityNell · 06/07/2010 13:45

nothing again for this afternoon. and i can't yet book in for next week as their systems have a bug. couldn't go this morning was sports day at the DCs school.
