Have just read side effects leaflet ..... am feeling low and tired and tearful most of the time, and GP says I am NOT menopausal (having tried HRT which was a disaster) so has presecribed Sertraline, which I had never heard of. Would love to know if anyone has anything helpful to say.... TIA

I am just about to start it once I have come off citalopram. i am 23 weeks pregnant, tempted to give it a miss as less anxious now I have reduced Citalopram, will be interested to read what the others say.

It totally saved me, when I developed depression during my last pregnancy. Within a month I was my old self; with only a very few side effects (headache, nausea) which were gone by the fifth day. To go from suicidal to normal in such a short space of time was for me, a miracle. I stayed on it 6 months and have been well since.

Good luck. x

I took Sertraline from 12 weeks pregnant with DD until she was about 18 months I think. I drank sometimes and was fine.

For me, Sertraline was a life saver (possibly literally). I found it made me sick at first although being not very pregnant may have made it more severe. But that stopped after about two weeks. Took about 4 weeks to really feel a bit better.

DH has been on sertraline for many years and found it effective. He did try and cut the does for a year but in the end he has had to go back to his old dose. The only side effect he seems to have had was some nose bleeds last year and his tryglacide cholestral reading was high. He has been on other medications but this is by far the most effective, without everyday side effects.

Great I cant wait, anxiety in pregnancy is dreadfull, dont wish i was dead, just someone else at times. i really hope it works for me

DH VERY anti me starting the tablets (as his mum died a valium addict 30 years ago) so dont know what to do... went on Patient.Co.uk which has hundreds of threads talking about the effects and to be honest Im wondering if its worth the risk. I know some people might say that 'she can't be depressed or she'd try anything' but I have had depression in one form or another all my life so maybe this is where I finally accept that I just have to live with it

I can't comment on your individual circumstance BCBG, but if a doctor has perscribed you it its because you medically need it. If you weredeficient in iron you'd take iron tablets, so why not take something for seratonin deficency

I take it too, I had to have my dose upped before I became to feel better. I do have drank while taking it and it does make you feel drunk quicker but haven't really had any side effects.

bruffin · 13/05/2010 10:08

DH has never been a big drinker but he he hasn't given up his normal drinking habit which is a beer with dinner a few times a week.

I take 50mg and i thnk it has made a diference. My psych said it's better not to drink but if I do then a little occasionally.

I don;t drink much anyway so that suits me.

He ants me to up it to 75mg soon, but I'm ok iwth the 50 at the moment.

I started with this when I had PND, very effective, this was years ago. Then I found I could stop taking it and just take it when I had PMT.

Told the GP this as as I thought it must be psychological as didn't take it for 3 weeks and took as PMT approached. She said it has been found beneficial for PMT and is a faster acting anti-dep than others, so if it worked for me this way to carry on. I don't drink so can't respond to that part of your query.

I find it stops me crying. First time I took it, I was driving along and thought I felt a bit strange and then realised, I didn't feel strange, I felt normal! (That's when I had the PND).

Must add that for me it is not good to take on an empty stomach as it gives me heartburn if I do. Make sure you have lots of water with the tablets.
