Escitalopram vs Citalopram

The last time I was depressed I took Citalopram. The side effects were grim but I stuck in there and eventually got good effects from them but with lethargy/sleepyness as long term side effects. I used to take it at night as it helped me sleep and also the nausea and side effects were then mostly over by the morning. I stopped taking them in april and felt pretty good until the last month or so.

I started on Citalopram last night and spent the night awake and with vomitting and diarrhoea.

Today my GP prescribed Escitalopram as an alternative.

Anybody have any experience of the two?

It says to take it in the morning, but past experience of citalopram is saying i shoud take it tonight before bed.

I feel a lot less sick today on the new one. I took it in the morning so i could see how sick i felt on it.

Aren't they the same? Escitalopram being the active ingredient and Citalopram being the trade name?

No, they are slightly different. Opposites on some chemical level and the dosages are different.

Actually finding escitalopram much easier to cope with. Just a low-level nausea but am managing to function normally with the side effects. Taking it in the morning seems to be fine.

With citalopram, there's no way i could have gone to work with the nausea that came on an hour or so after i took it. Feel a bit daft for continuing with it, I just so wanted to get better as quickly as possible that I couldn't bear the thought of starting a different drug and starting again.
