Finally pluck up the nerves to speak to him and he says that I need to be strong and not let my parents see me upset. Then says he will give me something to calm me down as a one off. Am I being over sensitive?

GPs aren't experts in mental health issues and some are still in the dark ages (pull yourself together madam).
Can you speak to a practice nurse or ask him for a referral to your local mental health team? Do you still have a Health Visitor who might be more sympathetic to what you need?

Try another doctor in the practice. Normally they specialise in one aspect of health- there may be a mental health expert.
Ours actually had to google what Tourettes was.

You can also check the NHS Choices website here to see if there's anywhere else in your area that could help

why shouldnt your parents see you are struggling?

Some GPs are crap with mental health as it is just not their speciality. My usual GP is fab, I have to have monthly appointments which I dread even though the GP is nice so I am always a little shy and reserved when I go in. Last month I had to see a different GP and he shouted at me, I got upset and then he told me I was wasting his time!

It's hard enough to ask for help without having the worry of getting that kind of reaction.
It is ignorance really.
Do you feel you are suffering from depression?
Hard as it may seem you should not give up seeking help or struggle on alone.
I believe you can actually self-refer to the Community Mental Health Team (CMHT), although not 100% sure on this. If you google your local NHS trust it should give you the contact details.
Or is there are female GP at your practise you could see?

Thanks for the replies guys.

My dad has cancer and I'm struggling. Its been going for a year now and he's just starting chemo again. I took vol redundancy when he was ill at the beginning of the year cause I couldn't work.

Think I am going to change GPs, I haven't liked/trusted him since he took over the pratice and maybe this is the push I need to go.

Haven't yet taken anything that he gave me, was just a bit scared as was staying with my parents and have never taken anything like that before.
