I would reckon that there would be alot of case history stuff taken. She may be given some homework as well.

But someone who knows more will prob be around in a minute.

If you are worried, why not call?

Homework? What sort, do you know? Talking about it makes her worse

CBT takes years of study so the therapist will know their stuff so don't worry. They'll work with her gently.

Why not buy a book on CBT or get one from the library? It may give you some insight?

Hope there's someone around soon to give you some info?

I know a few friends who've been for it and it's helped them so much.

DD2 is having CBT atthe mo.

her first appointment was just relating all her issues and problems again - to the umpteenth person - for the umpteenth time.

second appointment - they talked more about triggers and what her ssues are agin and mindmapped it out.

got third aqppointment next week.,

she has supposed to have been keeping a diary about triggers and feelings but she has flatly refused to.

she also comes out of the appointments more foul than usual and rants and raves about how evil the psychotherapist woman is.

It seems to be focussing on her main problem (anxiety and feeling sick all the time) and they haven't even mentioned her many other problems (temper, food, school etc)

I have yet to see any improvement in her behaviour but you never know - one day.............

Oh dear EC that doesn't sound good...... DD has been assessed at our local Family Center but 2 weeks later we are still waiting for her therapy to start. We are going private now, she appears (to me) to have OCD brought on by anxiety. She has impulsive unwanted thoughts (suicidal) and is getting more and more distressed.

I know this therapist does other therapies so maybe cBT might not be the one he chooses to go with.

"Homework" is just a task really - may be to be aware of when she is most calm/anxious, or a journal.

The most important thing that should happen in session one is for the therapist to start developing a positive therapeutic relationship really, but that can come with time too. They will take a basic history focusing on the current problems, what might have triggered them, what might have influenced them from the past, what is keeping them going and what her strengths are. They will prob discuss what approach is best for her and it may not necessarily be CBT (but that depends on what the therapist is trained in).

The assessment stage can often take a number of sessions and then they can discuss how everything comes together to help your DD make sense of it all. Then they will agree a treatment plan. CBT should be collaborative ie working together on shared goals- no point trying to get someone to do something if they don't want to or aren't ready! All depends what the issues are though. And yes 'homework' is often part of CBT but it's just keeping a simple diary really to see how thoughts, feelings and behaviours all link. It should all be fully explained by the therapist.

HTH & good luck!

how'd it go?

hohoholepew · 13/12/2009 10:48

It went really well thanks . DD ad the therapist really clicked IYSWIM? He is happy to see her again. He said alll the right stuff! He told her he can't change who she is, she'll always be anxious, but he'll help her to cope with it. At the moment her anxiety has caused the emotional side of her brain to override the logigal side. He is going to teach her EMDR to 're wire' her brain. It was very positive and I was very happy with the session, as was DD. He can see her again before Christmas and is going to do relaxation techniques with her and record it and burn her a CD to listen to everyday until he can see her again.
Thanks for all the replies
