Hi,

Today is day2 without Citalopram, and I'm beginning to feel a bit rubbish - nauseous, tired. Someone tell me that this won't last for long! I've been on it for about 18 months, and am hoping that I can do without it now. Fingers crossed!

I hope you manange to come off them. i never have been able to-been on them now for 3 years. everytime i try to stop or increase gap between taking them i just feel so moody and irritable that i give in and take them again. what dose are you on?

bottersnike · 27/11/2009 09:32

I started on 20mg about 18 months ago, then 6 months ago went down to 10mg.
Feel a bit better today, but still soooo tired.

I was on 40mg earlier this year and am now down to 10mg per day. My GP advised me to stay on this dose over the winter and wait until spring to try to come completely off them.

IMoveTheStarsForNoOne · 27/11/2009 10:04

I'm still on 20mg (after being on 30mg for months). Thinking about cutting down to 10mg as prob TTC soon... bit scared though.

Elk - that's good advice from your GP, I don't think I'd cope with coming off them in dull and miserable January...

hi there, have any of you breastfed whilst taking citalopram? if so did it efect little one at all?

bottersnike · 27/11/2009 12:49

no, both boys were past the breastfeeding stage by the time I went on Citalopram. I've heard that you're not supposed to feed when on them, though. Can't imagine it's a good thing for a baby to have.
I considered waiting till spring, but I'm fed up of being on them, so decided to do it now, in time for the New Year.

I was put on citalopram while still breastfeeding - the drug can get through to little one, but is supposed to be safe.

HypotheticalMummy · 02/12/2009 21:28

I was told by my doctor that I could not take citalopram whilst pregnant, so as I am ttc I stopped taking it. After 8 or so years of being constantly on antidepressants, the feeling of being without is just not pleasant. I am really struggling. I just don't feel human.

Good luck with it! I have been on 30 mg after horrendous pnd for 2 years now. Wishing you loads of luck

Fruitysunshine · 04/12/2009 00:22

I am now on 20mg of Citalopram for a few weeks now. Was on 40. Will try to reduce to 10mg after winter...

mears · 04/12/2009 00:35

I would have thought it was best to wean off than just stop. Reduce dose then take one tablet alternate days for a week, then every third day, fourth day etc. Are you stopping with advice from GP?

bottersnike · 04/12/2009 12:42

I stopped following my GP's suggestion that I was probably ready to try. Originally I was going to wean off them slowly, but then I ran out of pills, and couldn't be bothered to get any more.
With hindsight, it would have been physically easier to come off them over a few weeks, but it's done now, and honestly, I feel so much better today!
The brain shakey thing has eased off, and my IBS has completely cleared off ( GP said there was no possible link between Citalopram and IBS ). I beg to differ.
Good luck to all those trying to come off this medication. If it's the right time, it is so worth it

Took me about a week to feel ok after coming off it.
Think the symptoms you describe are what i felt, so quite normal.

Give it time, ive been ok for 4 years now, stick it out xxxx

anonandlikeit · 06/12/2009 22:45

I stopped about 5 months ago & so far so good... I reduced the dose graduall, 20mg, then 10mg & then halving the 10mg tablets until i ran out, although during the last couple of weeks i forgot to take them a few times, so I missed a few too.
Can't say I had any side effects realy so would def advise to do it slowly.
Good luck.
