Last time I came off citalopram I did it really slowly, halving the dose for a while then taking the half dose every other day, then every third day - no withdrawal symptoms thankfully. I would do the same this time (am on citalopram and bfing, no plans to stop either as yet). Not sure if the baby would get withdrawal or not, but if you cut down really slowly, anything that comes through in your milk would decrease equally slowly so hopefully no withdawal in the baby.

I've been on 40mg of Citalopram for 6 years to help get through my divorce. I've been trying to wean off of them now for about 6 months. I'm down to 20 mg every 4 days, but I can't stop them. My head hurts, I'm dizzing, I get the "zapping" feeling in my head, I'm MOODY and sometimes just plain mean. I'm beginning to feel like I'm never going to be able to stop them completely. Please help...I need reassurance. BTW, I'm 50 and going through menopause...add hot flashes to the mix and you get a very, very aggitated woman!!! LOL

I have recently stopped taking citalopram after being on it for 5 years for pnd coupled wity my partner leaving me when our son was 12 months old.i was on 40mg then dropped to 20mg early last year,I have previously tried to come off them and failed feeling totally unwell in terms of emotions, crying, feelings of worthlessness etc. I decided this year to try to wean myself off them as i dont want to be on them all my life after being told by one GP that because in had been on them for so long chances are i would be on them for life,i then told her i wasnt happy with that and why had i not been offered councilling??
I have councelling booked for the end of the month! Hurrah!! Not soon enough! But my symptoms of weaning myself off ctp are frightening, i went from 20 mg to 10mg over a 6 week period then i halved my tablets to 5 mg for 4 weeks then stopped 2 weeks ago. My god!!!! The last week has been horrendous, i have cried none stop,i feel worthless, i feel like a failure and i am a burden on my whole family. I even think my son doesnt love me and wants to live with his dad(who has now bought a beautiful house and moved in with woman he left me for, my son has finally met her and thinks she is great, altho at 6 he doesnt understand she took his daddy away.that still hurts!) i have also had really bad diahrea, unset stomach and my head feels like it is full if pingpong balls!
On the up side!! I am determined to get off these tablets because i know deep down that i need the old me back. Whilst on them i have been in a sedentary state, gained 4 stone, had no motivation to do anything, and had zero sex drive. I am lucky my new partner is understanding and is amazing helping me with my withdrawal.
Fingers crossed these symptoms dont last too long! I am off to paint my toes, little things work wonders!!!!
