Sertraline and memory loss

Does nayone else experience this, I have always been a bit dippy but over the last few years my short term memory loss has got awful. It is so bad now that I do something and then seconds later forget I have done it, it makes me quite anxious and panicky as I am always losing things and then get frustrated with myself.

I had assumed it was just me but was talking to a friend who said she also had really bad short term memory loss and it seemed to get better when she stopped taking the sertraline.

I will of course see my doctor about this at my next review but was wondering if anyone else had this. I have seen it listed as a rare side effect.

my memory was shot instantly on sertraline. It also gradually killed my motivation. When it worked best I had to be exercising and eating healthily. Otherwise I was completely lethargic and spent hours on mumsnet deluding myself.

My personal take on it is something to do with visual memory. My memory is very visual e.g. visualing where I put something down. I also remember things kinesthetically, I can remember my body putting the keys down etc. possibly as I had a chink of dopamine when I did it. Also I get anxiety about whether I will remember something so I tend to remember. Sertraline killed all of this. It killed my motivation for sorting problems out and made me feel comfortable and nice. I don't want to put anyone off it as it did also help me through a difficult patch. I came off it after 6 months and that was so hard, had awful IBS that took months to sort out.

Now on citalopram 10mg which is slightly better. I think the best thing for memory is sleep and meditation to be honest.

@Vicky12310 I wondered this too, I googled dementia but it is not at that level. I think it might be a case of retraining the brain again although I am not sure in what, I feel like giving something sustained focus and setting a challenge might help, for me.

Yeah I googled dementia too as I just lost my gran from it a few months ago and thankfully it's not genetic but I have also had a bad knock to my head but I have a phone appointment on tuesday to speak about everything

Hi! So, I’ve not been on Zoloft/Sertraline for more than a few months, but I’ve recently noticed some serious short term memory problems. I’m coming off now to avoid it getting worse - slowly weaning - but you should always be aware of your own body

Now you come to mention it, you are right OP. Sertraline is an amazing drug but a double edged sword.

Don’t let anyone tell you what you are feeling is wrong- family, friends, or your doctors. Generally they end up being wrong and then it’s too late to handle the real issue

This has happened to me alot lately and I take sertraline and melatonin. Apparently it can be a side affect of sertraline but if so needs to be discussed with your doctor as its a rarer side affect (I've been on sertraline for over 3 yrs maby and melatonin 1 or 2 on and off)

Hey there,

I've been on Zoloft for quite a while now, and honestly, it’s been a lifesaver for me. I haven’t experienced anything like what you’re describing—maybe a couple of minor side effects in the beginning, but they disappeared pretty quickly. That being said, everyone reacts differently, and memory issues can happen, even if it's rare. Definitely bring it up with your doctor, but also try keeping a journal or using reminders to help with the forgetfulness in the meantime—it might ease some of the frustration.

Also, I’ve found that quality matters a lot when it comes to Zoloft. To minimize side effects and get the best results, I always order mine from this trusted pharmacy: topsup24.com/buy-zoloft-uk.html. It’s always top quality and super effective! Hope you find some answers soon, sending you lots of love! 💛
