Paroxetine?

I have been prescribed Paroxetine by my gp as he said it was safe to use whilst breastfeeding. I have read the leaflet which says breastfeeding mothers can take it, however, have been doing some internet searches and opinions vary, some say it is not advisable to continue breastfeeding whilst taking Paroxetine.

Another thing, is that some of the side effects are "significant weight gain", and "severe withdrawl effects when discontnuing usage".

So not sounding like I want to take this at all really. It would be helpful to know if anyone on here uses Paroxetine.

Thank you

Paroxetine, hmmm rings a bell. Is it for anxiety?

FelineFine · 21/04/2009 18:34

hmm that will be a no then.

It's for PND, anxiety.

It's an anti-depressant / anti-anxiety drug. I took it for years for recurrent major depression, but it stopped working for me.

Opinions vary on taking all the anti-depressants during pregnancy and breast-feeding. I'm struggling with this at the moment, been stripped of my fantastic venlafaxine, now on citalopram.

The problem is, there's not a lot of decent research, due to the ethics issue. They're not going to run trials on pregnant/breast-feeding women, so they have to go with small sample sizes and case studies. Try not to scare yourself. Your GP's opinion is that it's OK. Some GPs will have the opinion that you should go without. I think the most sensible option for you and your child is that you do what you need to to keep your mental health decent. For me, that means drugs. Not for everyone, but they do work, IME.

Side effects, just because they're listed doesn't mean they will happen to you.

Yes, I remember them now.

No I didn't put any weight on with them. As for severe withdrawal when discontinuing use-age, does it perhaps mean if you stopped taking them suddenly?

With some AD's to come off them you either half the dosage or take 1 one day then none the next then one next day and so forth.

I cannot remember having and really bad side affects tbh.

Possibly low sex drive but that can be due to the depression also.

If you feel anxious and your GP had prescribed them I would advise you to at least give thenm a try.

It usually takes 21 days for most medications to be right into your system, so if before then you feel horrid or fat you can stop and tell your GP and he can try something else.

IME Mitrazipine were the only medication to make me fat. I could not stop eating. I was baking cakes for my children and leaving themone each and eating the other 10 through-out the day!

Best of luck.

Thanks for that, makes it less scary. I have not started taking them yet, have been putting it off, but I guess I need to give them a go, or else I will never know if they work. x

Yep, pop the pill, and don't think about it too much or you'll be imagining side effects all day long!

I really hope they work for you. Best of luck.

Hope you feel better soon.
