I had a huge panic attack on Sunday and just haven't felt right since. I have a list of symptoms as long as your arm, feel dreadful and there is no escape right now.
I went to the Dr's yesterday and he gave me some info on Panic Attacks, said I was stressed and gave me a paperbag, surprisingly used this morning did actually help. I think he was reluctant to prescribe anything as hopefully things will turn around for me soon but I've just got to find away to get through this before I have a complete break down. I'm using my rescue remedy and camomile tea but just need something calm me down. Honestly I just feel like walking out the door right now

Know how you feel, answered to your post on my thread xx

georgiemum · 17/02/2009 10:38

Try the Bach flower remedies - they do a few different ones. My old boss used to drink the stuff.

When you start having an attack you need to breathe through your nose (you can't hyperventilate this way). Try to slow down your breaths - breathing from the stomach slowly and easily. Think of breathing out all the stress and anxiety and the new breath is bringing in calm and relaxation.

Focus on someting outside of yourself - counting trees, writing down your symptoms, reciting a poem, or your 12 times tables... anything really to stop you focussing on what you are feeling.

It's ok - we all get it.

I have just started taking 5 htp which is supposed to be very good for anxiety. I am using it for depression. You can get it from Holland and Barrett.

I recommend researching it first though to see if it may be for you.

MuppetsMuggle · 17/02/2009 10:46

can you ladies possibly have a look at my thread on this subject Majorly Stressed pls.

Thanks

VintageGardenia · 17/02/2009 10:49

I would suggest that you maybe go to a homeopath who would be able to recommend a remedy that is appropriate to your precise symptoms - it will depend on what brings on the stress / anxiety, how they make you feel, what makes you feel better, and so on.

Sorry I didn't mean that to sound simplistic - only that there are so many possible remedies, this might make sure you get the right one.

MuppetsMuggle · 17/02/2009 10:53

here

ladies would that help me too on the link above.

Thanks

Cranberry hope you it helps you

Cranberry · 17/02/2009 10:53

Thanks for all you quick responses. I'm using the resue remedy but not sure it helps. I feel like I'm in a vicious circle at the. When I had my panic attack my arms and face went sort of numb but not to touch if that makes sense now I'm getting constant waves on this numbness in my face and arms then I panic again! Dr says it's brought on by stress and I know it is but cannot seem to rationlise it then I get annoyed with myself and it starts all over again.

sounds scary cranberry, do you know what is stressing you out??

Cranberry · 17/02/2009 11:04

I was very scared in Sunday, I get to my dh to help me calm down, never felt so out of control. Dr says I described exactly what a panic attack is but it hasn't made me feel any better.
Right now we have no money as our business is not trading well, dh is looking for a permanent job but it's taking time, we've got a horrible court battle going in about maintenance for my ss, he is now suffering from the affects of it as relations have broken down between both parties, have 3 boys to look after and my dh 40th is next month and things we had planned have been cancelled, he's down and short tempered at the moment, has stomache problems and is waiting for hospital refferal and then his uncle did!. Bet you wished you hadn't asked

I see you have a lot on your mind. (know the feeling, although my troubles are nothing compared to yours).

I have no advice tbh. but hope you find something that will help you out.

georgiemum · 17/02/2009 11:11

I am not suprised you are having panic attacks.

You need to get away from it - even 1 hour a day. Go for a walk, swim or run - release some endorphins into your system. Take a vitamin B complex for your nerves.

MuppetsMuggle · 17/02/2009 11:14

GM do you think that would help me too?

candyfluff · 17/02/2009 11:17

yes id say if you can go for a walk
i walk for miles when im anxious
maybe go back to gp
just remember a panic attack cant kill and as much as its awful it will pass eventually
paper bag a good idea keep one in ur handbag too incase it happens when you are out.
hope you feel better soon xxxx

MuppetsMuggle · 17/02/2009 11:21

CF - I don't have panic attacks. I'm just really stressed and don't know how to unwind and get myself out of it. see my link above.

Cranberry - would you be able to get out and hhave a walk etc??

georgiemum · 17/02/2009 11:26

Exercise is good for clearing the mind. I always advise patients to walk or do someting they enjoy as often as they can. Also good for the blood pressure and cholestoral.

You can also try the 'therapist's cheat' exercise. Bear in mind that the brain is just a jumble of chemicals and can be tricked...

stand up straight with arms hanging by side palms facing forward
lift up chin to sky
put a stupid big grin on your face
stand for as long as you want

This stance does actually 'trick' the brain into thinking that you are happy. It does work. Don't know why ut it does. You may look daft and start giggling but it is a start.

MuppetsMuggle · 17/02/2009 11:29

Thanks GM - I don't suffer Panic Attacks - but from my link above tells you all about what i feel right now. What are your thoughts on how i feel??

I'm willing to try anything.

georgiemum · 17/02/2009 11:44

Have you got someone to talk to - mum, friend, counsellor at college?

You have a lot on your plate and are feeling overwhelmed by it all. Write down all the things that are stressing you out, then sit down and talk to your other half about it.

There will be some things you can do something about and some things that you cant, but if you discuss them, you can see how you can go on from here. Maybe something has to give? Can you take time off studying just now?

candyfluff · 17/02/2009 11:46

i dont either just get anxiety that goes on for a long time days sometimes.
have you tried kalms tablets a herbal remedy,i have they might work for you.the night time ones are very good if you cant sleep

MuppetsMuggle · 17/02/2009 11:53

GM - i can talk to my mum, but feel am stepping on egg shells around her at the moment, as shes going through the change and the slighest thing can start her off. I try not to trouble friends as they have their own issues without me unloading my problems onto them.

I can tell DP anything. however, when i told him yesterday i was feeling low, he asked whats wrong, i told him, but his perception of it, was a little off iykwim. so i don't know.

can't take time off studying tbh, trying to catch up on what i've missed so far with DD being ill. most of my exams are out of the way only got 3 left i think, so its mainly coursework/assignments to do.

MuppetsMuggle · 17/02/2009 11:55

i might try kalms candy thanks.

Cranberry · 17/02/2009 18:25

Thank you all for the advice today, think I'll get some calms tomorrow. I popped out for about 10 mins and ran to my friends and I reallt did feel better, even if it wasn't for very long. I just wished I could shake the whole feeling like I'm going to pass out and this strange numb feeling in my arms and face, thankfully it comes and goes I guess as I stop focusing on it. I just feel like sreaming "can everyone just shut up and leave me alone".
I'll see how I go this week and if things don't improve go back to the Dr's.

I've just posted this breathing exercise on MuppetsMuggles thread:

Tip of tongue on the ridge behind your top front teeth.
Close Mouth and breathe in through your nose to a count of 4.
Hold breath for a count of 7.
Breathe out through your mouth making a gentle whooshing sound to a count of 8.

Repeat four times.

You can do this as often as you want. Eventually you can do more than four cycles per time - but if you do too many at the beginning you will feel dizzy.

Hope you start to feel calmer soon.

Cranberry · 17/02/2009 19:39

Thanks FT, I have been doing my breathing exercises and they do help, I'll try this one too although I'm feeling dizzy enough as it is. It's amazing how stress can manifest itself.
