Anyone on Trazodone for depression? I would like some reassurance ...

Diagnosed with depression about a month ago. Was initially on fluoxetine but I developed acute anxiety as a side effect. GP has today changed my prescription for trazodone, as being a different class of AD. However the anxiety I'm suffering is as a side effect of fluoxetine, not a symptom of my depression, so I'm a little sceptical about this. My dh is concerned that this is an older type of AD and therefore has more potential to be addictive. I've read a little bit on the internet about it, but would like to hear from people who use/have used it.

Thanks puzzlerocks. Anyone any advice?

I don't know about that individual drug, I'm afraid. But I do want to say that the older class of ADs are not addictive. Please don't worry about addiction. When people speak about difficulties coming off ADs they generally just mean niggly physical problems that are very easily managed -- it just means you need to cut the dose down gradually over a few weeks.

I was on various older-generation ADs for ages before the SSRIs came along. If anything they are safer because tried-and-tested over a longer period.

I know that is only minimally helpful bcs you want someone with experience of that particular drug. But at least it keeps it bumped for you.

Thanks threadworm, that's reassuring

I took it for 3 months. Definitely worked as an anti-depressant, not too good for anxiety though.

I was put on it for anxiety and it made it much much worse, although I am highly unusual apparently

Not at all addictive though. I switched to another ad, and cross tapered trazodone from a very high dose over 5 days. No visible side effects

rhksmum · 03/02/2009 18:08

I'm on it as well as citalopram and quitiapine(sp)
I've only been on the trazodone for 2 weeks now but have not found them helpful. My psychiatrist put me on them to help me sleep and to try and help me with my anxiety/ocd, but on both accounts they have failed, my sleep is worse and my ocd/anxiety is going through the roof just now.
One of my friends is on it and it works fine for her so I guess it works for some people, just not me

Have taken this in the past in quite high doses and had no difficulty coming off them - much less addictive than SSRIs IME. Hope they work well for you.

I've taken it in the past too. Was prescribed it to try and help my anxiety and sleep issues whilst I was depressed. It didn't really help my depression as such, but no real side-effects either.

Having said that, build up the dose gradually. I upped it too quickly and turned into a zombie for weeks. Felt like I'd been hit over the head with a frying pan. But other than that, it was ok for me. No problems coming off it either, as far as I can rememember (but it was about 6 years ago)

rhksmum, that's exactly what happened to me.

I never slept for 3 months, and I kept going back and saying my anxiety was getting worse, and they kept upping the dose....the final dose pushed me over the edge...

eek fizzbuzz!!!

Like any ADs, I guess they work for some and not for others, as you say rhksmum. I'm going to give it a go for this week I think, and watch my symptoms carefully. I just want to be well
