Hello

I've just been prescribed citalopram, as very depressed, having given up Prozac whilst pregnant with 2nd. I'm week 27.
I've taken 2tablets so far, and feel very wierd. Been researching poss. effects to baby, and there's some very scary stuff reported on internet.
Does anyone have any experience? Had any babies born showing withdrawal??

Thanks

AAL I was taking citalopram pre-conception and up unti 20 weeks. I was referred routinely to the perinatal psychiatric team and they switched me to clomipramine (safer use in pg plus safe to use whilst bf). I'm still taking it now and ds2 is 26 weeks. There should be a similar team within the NHS to which your gp and mw can refer. Have you looked at your local nhs services? (try www.nhs.co.uk and search for local services).
Hoping you get the help you need, and that your meds start working for you soon.
fwiw - my gp looked into the available research on citalopram in pg. Very limited but what they did have showed the newborns may have a 0.05% chance of raised bloodpressure when mum had been taking 60mg of citalopram in pg.

Hi AAL,
I was not pregnant when taking it but they did make me feel very sicky and woozy for the first couple of weeks. Not very nice to start with but it soon wore off.

My husband had just starting taking this (as been diagnosed with alzheimers)and depression, the 10mg was far too strong for him we tried it twice, so i told the phstchiatrist and they said to stop taking it, then his depression got worse, after a couple weeks going crazy i asked if he could take a 1/4 of a tablet a day instead and was told yes and try to up it, he is now on 1/4 twice a day and is 100% better, still has his alzeimers but is much calmer etc.
