Don't know if I'm posting in the right place but I have suffered with PND and am very up and down with depression (My Dad has bipolar disorder and my brother so think I may have it too). My ups and downs are very much exacerbated by my menstrual cycle and feel my blood boiling round in me just before I am due on. A friend has suggested I try the morena (is that right?) coil. has anyone got any experience of this helping them?

hi. its called the mirena coil. there are lots and lots of posts on mn about it....

i am prone to depression, and had mine removed because i was feeling worse and worse....almost as soon as it was out, my moods lifted...

it may be fine for you, but you really need to discuss it with your gp....

i hope you feel better soon. x

The mirena made me hormonal the same as the pill - sorry

Thanks. I will try to discuss with GP. Am trying to avoid ADs and GP has given me the impression that unless I want drugs there's not a lot of point going to her with depression. That's why I was hoping mirena might be an answer. Will see if I can find other stuff about it on here.

Don't know about mirena coil, but you could try dietary things - any foods or supplements that help your liver to remove excess hormones, e.g milk thistle (herb), mung beans (v quick to cook, no soaking, add to rice), etc. Also soya is good (you'll hear conflicting advice about soya, but basically check out 'PMT' and women in the Far East - they have a high soya content and low levels of hormonal conditions which we Westerners suffer from.)

Best of luck!

Like some other posters here I also found the Mirena affected my mental health adversely (to say the least!). I am prone to depression and anxiety, and frankly I was ill the whole time the Mirena was in. I had it removed last summer and am now gradually returning to normal.

I should add that not everyone experiences severe side effects, but do be aware that it can affect your mental health especially if you are prone to depression or anxiety. The product monograph goes into this but I was not warned before having mine fitted!
