Urgent help please - If someone is threatening suicide, who do you call?

Visited ILs today and brought MIL home for tea to separate them as they have been housebound due to illness/injury. FIL is v low right now and was talking about suicide while I was there so I made a GP appt for Monday for him. DH is taking MIL back later tonight and to assess FIL himself. If he thinks it's a real danger, who should he call?
NB We don't think it would be safe for FIL to start anti-depressants at home as any initial side effects could be dangerous for MIL. DH is planning to take him to the GPs on Monday and if anti-ds mentioned, ask about a stay somewhere to get through the first part.

Any advice appreciated thanks.

So sorry to hear this buckets. There should be a local emergency psychiatric team listed in your phone book/yellow pages, or you might be able to find this number via the NHS website. I do hope your FIL can get the support he needs.

out of hours surgery, 999, take him to A&E, something like a MIND helpline may be able to advise also.

2 options spring to mind -

firstly, social services will run an emergency out of hours service - should get no. online or in phone book. They will have staff on call trained to deal with mental health issues who can assess FIL if need be or offer advice or refer on for morning mental health team if felt it can wait. Alternatively you could go to A&E but you'll prob. wait for long while till appropriate member of staff comes to assess. Personally I'd ring out of hours. I used to be an Approved Social Worker and cover early eve. out of hours. They can advise and listen and are really skilled.

Could you ask for an emergency appointment with the GP?

Thanks. Managed to find a mental health number online (not easy actually!) and DH chatted to a duty person for advice before he they left. Haven't had any panicky phonecalls so assuming no news is good news.
