recommendations for psychotherapists / counsellors in Cambridge

Hi people
I wondered if anyone could recommend a psychotherapist or counsellor in Cambridge who they've found helpful. Friends have found in the past that certain counsellors were not very helpful - in particular, they've felt that the counsellors were intellectual or mentally quick enough to support their needs well. Does anyone know of a fairly 'intellectual' psychotherapist or counsellor, who might perhaps be experienced in working with highly academic and driven people?
Thanks for any replies!

It might be worth contacting the uni and seeing who they may recommend? They probably have a contract for staff counselling and have recommendations for counsellors who meet this criteria.

Thanks! The problem is that, ironically, it's the University counsellors who friends have had bad experiences with. That's why I'm trying to find someone privately, rather than go through the University staff counselling services.

You might be better off with one of the well-established professional associations with a developed academic and research background to their philosophy.

There's someone in Cambridge on this list

Or this list

Or this lot

I second frogs - best to go through an association so you know the therapist is properly qualified.

From there, finding a therapist you have a 'fit' with is a very personal thing - so recommendations won't necessarily actually be helpful.
Have a conversation with a few therapists about what you are looking for and the way they work - this will give you a reasonable sense of it, and the assessment session is there for both of you as a taster. It might cost you a little before you find the right person, but could be well worth it.

If you are not particular about psychodynamic therapy, the British Psychological Society will give you a broader spectrum of therapists to choose from.

good luck!

Thanks very much for taking the time to look this up for me and post - it's very cheering to know that people have done this for me.
