Seem to be having blank episodes in my memory...

It seems like such a small thing - I put something down and then forget where I've put it. I know it happens to everyone but you can usually retrace your steps and work out where the thing can be, right? Well I've been having these episodes lately where I am looking for something which I had just moments beforehand, and I have absolutely no recollection of putting it down. It's as if that part of my memory has been completely erased. Then all I can do is search and search, until I eventually find it in a random place that I wouldn't normally put it - and still I have no recollection of having put it there.

Has anyone else had this before? I wasn't worried about it until today and now I'm starting to wonder if it's normal.

Are you particularly busy or distracted at the moment?

I find if I have a lot on and am constantly running through stuff in my head I do things without noticing.

I have had this now and again, over the past year. Your post resonnates with my expereinces of this. When it happens it really is like a blank. Before, when i would forget something, when i found it again, i'd remember doing it. This feel quite different. Like it's 'gone' and i can't relate to that memory.

How old are you?

MrsMerryHenry · 16/12/2008 12:15

Hmm...well, I'm always under pressure and excessively busy...so that could be a reason! Would be great if that were it! When it happens to you do you also have a complete blank about where your stuff could be?

I'm just a sprightly 34! I eat pretty healthily, though now I'm thinking I should spend good money on some really top quality supplements like fish oils - funny, I did this throughout pregnancy spent ridiculous sums to benefit my baby but when I'm the only beneficiary it never occurs to me. Oh, the life of a mother!

Actually I should probably sleep more as well...

i do, i am totally blank, like i can't 'find' the memory. Funny, i was thinking myslef recently, god this is weird, now you have posted about a similar thing. I am nearly 40 and wondered if it was hormonal, as i was thinking the other month i had some night sweats etc...

MrsMerryHenry · 16/12/2008 12:21

It's rather uncomfortable, isn't it? You wonder what on earth you've been getting up to without knowing! Thankfully my blanks are only a few seconds long so can't be up to that much!

could be age , could be extreme busy-ness and stress. If it's just things you are putting down and not finding again, I wouldn't fret about it.

I have been getting it a bit recently - yesterday for e.g. I took the peg off DS's porridge bag and I STILL HAVE NO IDEA where I put it! couldnt find it after, anywhere! And all I was doing was making his porridge, so it's not like I went anywhere much - No clue where it is.

If you are really worried about it though, mention it next time you see your GP. I think it is probably normal-ish, but it could be something - see what your GP thinks if you need reassurance.

Or, just eat more chocolate! and drink more wine and then you won't care...

MumtoCharlieandLola · 16/12/2008 12:27

Do you drink much Mrs Henry? I don't mean you lose your memory when you are drunk (though I often do). Its just if you drink, it can kill off some of your brain cells and sometimes this affects your memory.

Thats what I blame my blank episodes on . That and having babies, they take some of your memory cells you know and you never get them back.

Greedy blighters.

MrsMerryHenry · 16/12/2008 12:31

OMG do you mean vodka in the mornings isn't good for the brain?

No actually I'm very abstemious when it comes to booze - no more than 3 units a week, I reckon.

As for chocolate...hmmm, thumbelf I'm beginning to suspect that you ought to retrain as a Women's Health Doctor!
