Odd choice of panel IMO

i am rather struck by the oddness of the concept spot a psychiatric service user

I don't really get the point of the programme tbh

What is it trying to acheive, for the purposes of mainstream, prime-time entertainment?

zippitippitoes · 11/11/2008 21:28

no idea i have learnt nothing

i cant see how you would spot someone like this and as they know why they are there do they control their traits if they know they have one

They were talking about this on BBC this morning. They said it agreed it seemed an odd concept but ended up being quite interesting how simple treatment can hide really big problems. Am not watching it though, is there someone with major shyness?

notnowbernard · 11/11/2008 21:36

This is boring

It's not challenging the misconceptions re mental illness that still prevail

Just men in suits speculating. Which we can all do. How is it helping?

zippitippitoes · 11/11/2008 21:39

i agree with you

i am shocked the panel are even doing this

but heyho they are probably spending more time than you get with someone as a patient

pointless

zippitippitoes · 11/11/2008 21:43

so the guy says he has gaps in his career cos of travelling so he might be bipolar

It may be interesting if they get the diagnoses all 'wrong'...........going to show that the DSM is not as objective as most psychologists claim it to be !

notnowbernard · 11/11/2008 21:51

It might highlight the psychiatric profession's tendency to medicalise what is either a personality trait or a complex life experience

IorekByrnison · 11/11/2008 21:52

I don't know what to make of this programme. I am simultaneously entertained and appalled by it, and by my own compulsion to guess who's got what.

It seems so wrong. But if the whole idea - as they were suggesting - is to demonstrate that mental illness can be subjective, and that our preconceptions are often wrong, then perhaps it's OK.

But if all those on the programme who had availed themselves of the psychiatric services were deemed cured, not sure what it demonstrates really. Is there really any difference between someone who has had an episode of mental illness in the past, and someone who hasn't, but may well do in the future?

zippitippitoes · 11/11/2008 21:53

i a m equally perplexed

MissChief · 13/11/2008 09:44

hmm, intriguing but rather exploitative concept, imho though seem to be handling them v carefully at least. hate the title though and hate the concept of "normal" versus, I guess they mean, "abnormal" ie MH user.

Men in suits - agree - half the group are women but none of the panel is! Methinks this is why they thought that woman was "normal" when it turned out that she had a MH issue. I'm certain most women would have detected her vulnerability - hard, masculine, solid facade hidden deeply away as she mucks in.
