ADHD diagnosis for adult son fast recommendation

MissFancyDay · 25/06/2026 15:32

I hope this is the correct place for this post. We need to get my son, 22, assessed for ADHD, potentially, as soon as possible. We can go down the private route for quickness within reason (I've just had a small inheritance). I just don't know where to start. Should we make a GP appointment first and ask for recommendations from them? Or find somewhere with good reviews online. Grateful for any advice.

If he wants the NHS to cover the cost of future medications then he needs to speak to his GP to find out which places they do shared care with.

CornishCornetto · 25/06/2026 15:35

I doubt the GP would know. Just google for diagnosis services in your area, and check that they follow the NHS requirements for a diagnosis (so that if he is diagnosed the NHS will recognise it and prescribe the medication). Then look at reviews.

Waiting lists can be long, it’s worth registering for a few clinics, and tell them you’ll take any cancellation appointments if one comes up.

No need to go to the GP first. We went with Berkeley Psychiatrists and they are fine. They do a good job and follow the right guidelines. They'll see you in person or over video.

@Junejunejune @CornishCornetto yes thanks for the shared care advice, I will bare that in mind

As he is an adult, if he has capacity in relation to wanting an ADHD assessment he needs to engage with his GP himself, of course, if he consents to it you can support him as parents.

Myskyscolour · 25/06/2026 15:47

We went private to avoid the months wait but also asked for a GP referral so when we finally get the assessment/ titration under shared care it will cover future costs.

TomClarkson · 25/06/2026 15:51

I used Berkeley psychiatrists as well. You must make sure the person doing the assessment is a proper psychiatrist, some of these ADHD companies use pharmacists and all sorts to assess. While they are qualified to do the assessment they have absolutely no other knowledge whereas a psychiatrist is expert.

Of course, he is very listless and depressed. He is relieved that I am doing some research. He just needs support and someone with a few ideas about how to proceed.

GPs are under no obligation to prescribe ADHD meds under shared care, so you might want to check with them to see if they offer this. Or be prepared to pay privately.

From recent experience some private diagnosis through the NHS make promises re medication only to find money has run out.So total waste of NHS funding. You are expected to fund the medication yourself as GPs can’t prescribe. This person is now starting the process again via the GP and the wait is very long.

MissFancyDay · 25/06/2026 16:34

I think that we will probably start private and Gp together. He can talk to the GP anyway to ask the policy in our area. We can fund for a while anyway, with the hope that he can fund himself when able.

ok so its like this: He needs to go to his GP and tell them about his adhd struggles. Straight away ask for right to choose. Once forms come in go to adhd website and look at waiting times, choose a provider that has minimal waiting list for NHS patients. It may be worth confirming with GP surgery if they would agree to shared care before hand (even if its a worst case scenario and the decline, he would still be paying nhs prices which is much less than private. If he would to wait on usual referal this can be years, I know many people waiting for 2-4 years! )
My relative just went with Berkley Psychiatrist through right to choose and everything was done within 2 weeks and medicated.

Me on another side- went privately, spend thousands on medication and diagnosis, was waiting and waiting to be seen, all in all more than a year!
Wish I just did the above steps instead.

Thank you for this advice. I understand that there might be a bit of pushback by the GP. I hope he will be able to state his case (he doesn't seem capable of doing much under any kind of pressure at the moment) We will see how it goes.

I'm very grateful for the advice from everyone. Thanks.

Use this website to find the Right choose provider waiting times for your area. Then simply chose a provider, go to their website and follow the instructions the provider gives for approaching the GP. Many providers ask you to fill out a simple screener questionnaire and provide a letter to give to the GP.

Definitely recommend you go down the right to choose avenue. It's a private assessment but it's funded by the NHS. I had mine this year within 6 weeks
