Hi,
just looking for some information/help if possible.
last night I caught my partner trying to commit suicide.
I feel like I haven’t done enough to make sure he is safe. I informed his family and spoke to him about what was going on and why it had come to this. He eventually went out for a drive with his brother to talk about what’s going on etc, he came home, had a shower and went to bed. He has woke up this morning like nothing has happened, gone to work and all day I have been on edge.

he has had things happen in previous years which have taken a toll on his mental health but I am seriously concerned about him and i am unsure where to go from here. Is there anyone I can contact for him without needing his permission? I have asked him to get help for suicidal threats before, he contacted the doctors and they basically just fobbed him off. He is reluctant to get help again due to this.

You could contact MHAS and ask someone to talk to him, but unless there is an obvious and immediate threat to his or someone else's wellbeing, then that would be entirely at his discretion. They can't compel him to talk to them, and speaking as someone who has been in your position, his position, and works with people who have lifelong diagnoses, it isn't a good idea to pressure him into talking right now in any case.

The fact the doctors have "fobbed him off" is likely just his account of what actually happened. GP's can't provide mental health triage, which is what most people feel like they need in the immediacy. All they can do is refer you on to CMHT for assessment and perhaps prescribe routine antidepressants in the meantime.

If you think he's an immediate danger to himself, then either MHAS or A&E, but again, getting him to comply is another matter, and no, the simple fact someone is expressing suicidal ideation or even that they have attempted recently is often not sufficient for MHAS to regard it as a situation that requires intervention against the person's wishes.

I believe you could call 111 option 2 to ask for advice and sign posting.

Thankyou!, yes of course I would never force him into it, I just feel it would be in his best interest to talk to somebody about everything really. It’s hard for me to watch, especially when we have 3 young children together.
i have been in exactly the same position but I was 20 and my mum managed to get me sectioned without my consent, this was in 2018. I have spoke to her about this in regards to my partner but she can’t quite remember how she did it.
yeah I have no doubt he downplayed the severity of it all, when I’ve spoke to him he refuses to get help as he thinks it ‘makes him less manly’ having mental health problems.
I will try any route I possibly can and again thankyou!
