How long did duloxetine side effects last after stopping it?

This isn't really a MH issue, but I'm not sure where else to put it.

My DD was prescribed duloxetine for migraines and it's not worked at all, plus has given rough side effects ever at 30mg, so the GP has now taken her off it again. She's now on day 16 post stopping and is really struggling with hideous nausea and vomiting and dizziness. She does seem to be hypersensitive to medications and has ended up in A&E before due to side effects, but this one is really taking the biscuit. Can anyone advise as to how long it took them to feel even vaguely back to normal? She was only on it for 3 weeks!

I’m scared now. I’m on 90mg

It can take ages to taper off. There’s a Facebook group called Cymbalta hurts worse that has lots of people on it trying to get off. It may be reassuring to hear it’s not unusual to find it hard.

I had to taper by counting beads out of each capsule and reduce over months. Else I got horrendous side effects.

Thanks DeltaVariant. I'll tell her to discuss with the GP next week and see what they say. Not sure if it's worth going back onto very small doses to help with the current side effects, but we shall see.

If I reduce from 90mg to 60mg, will I get withdrawal symptoms? I’ve only been on 90mg for 8 days but 60mg for about 4 months.

It took me probably at least 18 months to taper off. I was splitting 10mg capsules at the end.

Why do psychiatrists not mention this? Bastards!

The brain shuddering was awful

Thanks all. It sounds like it's a complete nightmare, so we just now need to know if it's worth going back onto a very low dose at least to control some of the symptoms, as she can't keep losing weight like this (she wasn't exactly large beforehand). x

Oh my. My DH was on this for peripheral neuropathy. It nearly broke him. Sleepless, anger issues, bad dreams, hallucinations. He had to taper off very very gradually and the effects stayed with him for a long time. He says if he’d had known the side effects he would never ever have taken them. They didnt help him in any way at all. All I can suggest is to monitor everything and if it gets bad then ring 111 for advice. The Facebook group as someone suggested up the thread was really useful.

I'm about to start these for fibro now I'm panicking. I've come off sertraline to change over.

Anyone any experience with them for fibro?

Roastwithallthetrimmings · 19/04/2026 17:09

Has anyone managed to get off them without having horrendous withdrawal symptoms?

RandomMess · 19/04/2026 18:43

@mrswishywashy1they can be used for pain management at a low dose with great success. As you have a chronic health condition presumably you will need pain management for a long time/forever?

Hopefully the would also help with anxiety/depression too?

RandomMess · 19/04/2026 18:45

@Roastwithallthetrimmingswhen I come off them very gradually I did manage it without withdrawal symptoms unless I had forgotten to take them.

The tapering at the end was very gradual and slow but doable. I had to invest in microgram scales, open the capsules, tip some out etc.

Octavia64 · 19/04/2026 18:46

I have them and have been on them successfully for about five years. Peripheral neuropathy plus anxiety.

never tried to come off them though.

Did your doctor advise you to taper down so slowly? It seems scandalous that it is being prescribed without warnings about how hard it can be to stop taking it.

My GP just left me to it!! I tried to do it cold Turkey and obviously was unable to as the brain shudders were horrific.

That’s disgusting that they are so clueless

I've been on Duloxetine for about 2 years. I'm 49 and had at knee replaced at 48...OMG they helped the pain so much. Still on them waiting for the second knee replacement.
