TW : Income protection payments stopped

Gipgone · 27/03/2026 21:50

Just heard that my employers insurance company has stopped my income protection payments without getting any medical evidence from my psychiatrist. It has sent me into a downward spiral because it is so unjust and I feel like killing myself now. I haven’t got the strength to appeal the decision

Sorry

Have they said why? How long have they been paying?

CoralMumsnet · 27/03/2026 22:49

Hello OP, we are really sorry to hear you are feeling this way.
We hope you don't mind, but when these threads are flagged up to us we usually add a link to our Mental Health Resources. You can also go to the Samaritans website or email them on [email protected]. Support from other Mumsnetters is great and we really hope you will be able to take some comfort from your fellow posters, but as other MNers will tell you, it's really a good idea to seek RL help and support as well.
We also like to remind everyone that, although we're awed daily by the astonishing support our members give each other through life's trickier twists and turns, we'd always caution anyone never to give more of themselves to another poster, emotionally or financially, than they can afford to spare.💝

Have they said why? How long have they been paying?

They said the medical evidence showed I could return to work. It would do as they didn’t get anything from my psychiatrist.
They have been paying for a couple of years but there is no way that I am capable of returning to work yet

Is there a time limit to the pay? And is it nhs psychiatric care or private? Just wondering if they are questioning the reports as in, the psychiatrist will keep getting paid as long as they sign your sick line?

PoppinjayPolly · 27/03/2026 23:03

Do you see yourself ever going back?

The time limit is to state retirement age. They didn’t get a report from the psychiatrist at all

I’m trying to get well enough to go back but it is a struggle. I’m improving but still working on basic functioning like sleeping, eating and getting out of the house so I have a long way to go

I don’t think psychiatrists waste their time on people who don’t need it, they have plenty of work without doing that.

is it psych that’s signing you off then? Why isn’t that enough?

If you’ve been off work for years, and plan to continue to be off work long term, due to your mental health then it sounds like you do need a psychiatrist.

When you say they didn’t get anything from your psychiatrist does that mean you do have one?

It may be worth exploring what benefits you would be entitled to if you were no longer employed. If you think they’re being deliberately difficult to get out of paying you then it might help to feel like you have an alternative to jumping through their hoops.

In the short term, are you continuing to accrue annual leave? If so your employer may allow you to take it while off sick to top up your pay.

Yes, I do have a psychiatrist but the insurance company made their decision without getting any medical report from him.
Thanks, It’s a good point about annual leave so I might have to ask my employer about that.It seems a bit cheeky to do that but I guess it is a legal entitlement.

Really don’t have the energy to fight this. Everything is such a struggle.
Do death in service payments get paid out in the case of suicide?

It sounds like something you should seek legal advice about.

Money is never worth killing yourself over. The pain, misery and life long mental health problems you’d leave your family with are just not worth it. The people that love you would rather you were alive and poor, than dead and they be rich.

There’s always universal credit etc if you do lose your income. In the future you might even find a job that is suitable for your health needs.

Its time to give your head a little wobble and get things in perspective.

Alpacajigsaw · 28/03/2026 00:21

I think you could do with some legal advice, but more importantly and urgently some medical advice immediately if you are contemplating killing yourself just now.

So sorry things are hard.

Thanks, I know you are right. It is just hard to fight this when I’m not feeling well enough. That’s what insurance companies rely on.
