PIP claim

My step son has recently been approved for PIP, but he made the claim from our address (was living with us) and has since moved out to a flat share. The assessment took place before he moved out. Does he need to notify the DWP and also would it have changed the assessment that hes now living independently. I'm concerned that he hasn't updated his information and is still claiming not to be able to do a high number of things he does for himself all the time.

Are you saying that he lied to get the PIP?

Penelope23145 · 24/01/2026 22:20

If his condition has significantly improved then yes he needs to let them know. It is made clear to claimants that they need to do this, not that many seem to bother reporting changes. If he has only just started to receive it recently though surely things cannot have changed much since he was assessed?

He should update the details. However pip is for long term conditions, does someone else now provide support to enable him to do things which you previously did.

Of course not! No one ever lies to get PIP, do they? The burden of proof is so high it would be impossible!

(and other MN nonsense)

Happyher · 24/01/2026 22:36

Does he still need the same support as before. If his needs have improved or increased since the assessment you need to report this. Also need to report the change of address so they know where he lives

I suggest many people actually downplay their symptoms. It’s an awful assessment and in reality you want to be as positive as possible otherwise the reality of the situation can be distressing. Yes I do get enhanced PIP for both and I also work full time and I’ve paid tax for 43 years. I also get a car on mobility but it’s not a BMW!

Lightuptheroom · 24/01/2026 23:37

No, he doesn't require the same support he had before
It was a telephone assessment so he wasn't seen by anyone.
I have no idea if he lied as I've no idea what he said at the assessment. He was declined when he applied previously as he didn't score anywhere near enough points and his conditions have improved significantly because of a new GP and proper treatment, plus deciding to live with friends.

I get the impression you want to report him as you are the evil step mother?

Lightuptheroom · 24/01/2026 23:50

No I'm not 'evil step mother' we've supported him for over 8 years through some very difficult times. Just want to make sure that he's changed his address etc if that's required (which I assume is also required for universal credit?) I last claimed benefits before pip and universal credit existed so don't know how it works

Surely he needs to declare his new address. Why is he no longer needing as much support? It sounds like he might not actually be eligible.

Theunamedcat · 24/01/2026 23:58

Yes he needs to change his address and report his improved condition

TheFairyCaravan · 25/01/2026 00:01

He definitely needs to update his address and if his condition has changed he,, also, need to inform them about that too.
