My sibling took an intentional OD and nearly died 2 nights ago

She has been in AMU as they stabilise her

Will the hospital automatically perform a mental health assessment and how likely is it they will section her?

Will they listen to our concerns as her family members?

We are terrified that on discharge she will repeat and be successful

Then the crisis team will come along and tell her she has capacity so can do what she wants the whole system is shit.

If they even come a number of my friends have just been allowed to leave with nothing.

I know it’s difficult but try not to take it personally OP. She is obviously severely ill and I don’t think it is unusual to try to distance yourself from your family when you are suicidal. I did it in the mistaken belief that they wouldn’t be so upset if I pushed them away.

A small update

MH team not happy with the way DS responds to stress and her lack of coping plus the repeated nature of her history and lack of diagnosis

she has been put under a section 2 where they say they will try for assessment and diagnosis of ASC and BPD and develop a treatment / management plan for all diagnoses

she is going to a new facility in the next day or so

mum has been accepted as NR and is being told a decent amount of information - the MH assessors seemed to see the inconsistency between DS withdrawing consent and also allowing mum to visit and provide many things plus look after her pets etc, so somehow got consent again

we are all so relieved

baby steps but it’s better than we hoped for at this stage

Although my mum forgot she was older than my dad and kept saying he was NR 🤣 not sure if it’s brain frazzled after the last few days or wishful thinking

I hope your sister gets the treatment she needs over the coming days and weeks. But BPD do you mean borderline personality disorder? If so, I think it's usually worth asking/considering if there is any possibility of PTSD as I think they can often overlap and it can affect treatment choices: https://www.ptsduk.org/ptsd-and-bpd/

That’s good. S2 is up to 28 days but she can be discharged from it much sooner than that if the consultant wants to. Your mum would be informed as NR but can’t stop that. I would be extremely surprised if she had an autism assessment/ diagnosis in an inpatient ward but an EUPD diagnosis is possible/ likely. In that case she will need to agree to engage with the follow up care. I would not expect miracles or a cure from the admission or for it to last very long but it’s good for her and for the family that she will have a breathing space of containment.
Do take care of yourselves and try to keep your own boundaries and only give what you are able to. It is better for her to have consistent regular low level support than to reject everyone so she has nothing and then have a big response to a crisis.

Edited

I do mean BPD

we found NHS therapy discharge letters saying she showed traits and recommending a formal assessment

PTSD is possible but not sure what the cause might have been

also suspecting permanent brain chemistry alterations from past drug abuse
