What small sensory thing drains you the fastest?

For me, it’s constant background noise. Not loud, dramatic noise, just the steady kind. Multiple conversations happening at once, a TV on for “background,” notifications chiming, appliances humming. Nothing that seems worth complaining about, yet my brain tries to process all of it at the same time and never gets a break.

It doesn’t feel overwhelming right away. It feels like quiet fatigue building in the background until I’m suddenly irritable, foggy, or completely shut down. By the time I realise what’s wrong, I’m already drained.

I’m curious how this shows up for others. What small, everyday sensory thing takes your energy the fastest—especially the ones people don’t usually notice or take seriously?

Omg my kitchen extractor fan. I can't even think with that thing going

This!

And the duty free shopping area that you have to walk through at airports. Too many shiny lights, glittery floors and garish displays. All too much for me.

SquigglePigs · 14/01/2026 20:22

I agree with you about background noise in general but the biggest issue for me is repetitive noises - a ticking clock, someone drumming their fingers, making clicking noises with their mouth etc.

Silence fillers.

I am someone who is very comfortable in silence, I love it in fact. I think there's nothing better than finding someone you can sit in comfortable, companionable silence with. So if I encounter someone in the wild who feels the need to fill every silence I become drained very quickly.

I really hate all the unsolicited nuisance calls, had 23 today block them, but it seems relentless

Hiccups (mine or other people's) or two people talking to me at the same time. The DC are particularly bad for that - they don't speak to me for ages and then suddenly desperately need to tell me something very important at the exact same time. Usually when I'm doing something else, leading to more overwhelm!

Noises, like children screaming, loud banging, men shouting, but also strong smells.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 14/01/2026 20:52

Building work.

Very bright/strip lights, sudden loud noises at work-phone/costa machine alarm when it needs cleaning/online order machine. People shouting across the room or down their phones-I’m on the autistic spectrum tho.

Morepositivemum · 14/01/2026 21:52

For anyone this may help, a lot of supermarkets only turn full lighting on an hour or two after opening so if you can go in early/ go on the specified autism friendly days it honestly helps so much

Low sound of a football being kicked off a wall/fence. I hate it. The sound makes my teeth itch.

Deneke · 14/01/2026 22:05

Yes, all of those and
The ding electric cars make when they reverse,
The noise self scanning machines make in supermarkets,
The beeps of the self checkouts and manned checkouts,
The click some phone keyboards make when someone types on them,
The noise the train makes to warn you the doors are closing,
The sound of the bell you press to make the bus stop,
People watching videos on phones without headphones,
Electric fans,
Fridges,
Hair dryers/hand dryers,
Tumble dryers,
Washing machines,
Perfume,
Scented fabric softener,
Air freshener,
Candles/incense

People eating loudly (with mouths open 🤢)

blueskydays45 · 14/01/2026 22:07

My classroom at work has 3 sets of lights, one of which also sets off the fan. After a day in the classroom, that one set of lights goes off immediately. The noise of the fan is a noise too much!

JacknDiane · 14/01/2026 22:11

People expecting you to sit and chat in your tea break.

I just need peace then.

JanglingJessica · 14/01/2026 22:12

Nasty feeling clothes. They feel wrong and it constantly irritates me until I'm unwittingly self harming minorly, just to distract from the wrong clothes. Up until then, it makes me feel anxious and just wrong, so I can't focus on anything.

I'm good at fabrics now, but seams, bras, and labels still catch me out sometimes.

LittleMonks11 · 14/01/2026 22:13

The Big Light being on.

If I’m too hot. When I’m overheated I get claustrophobic and ANGRY. There’s about 15 minutes until I blow my top.

aWeeCornishPastie · 14/01/2026 22:24

I am the same as you OP a quiet build up of background noises really triggers me. My daughter was coughing not even that loud earlier and not covering her mouth. It wasn’t even the fact she didn’t cover it was just so loud and it was sending me cuckoo . Eventually she apologised and corrected it
