what symptoms do you get with anxiety?

My husband has Been going through severe anxiety.

he has been having palpitations and chest pains every single day. So he is fearful of going out on his own.

he also gets leg pains, all day everyday.

the doctors can’t seem to find any reason for the cause. They did tests. So I am assuming it’s related to the anxiety?

but I have not heard anyone else go through these symptoms with anxiety. Wanted to ask here if anyone else does actually get these symptoms? And pains all over the body?

it started off with a panic attack he had, and has not settled since then. He does have spinal issues but it’s mild and the doctors said shouldn’t cause this issue.

If he's interested in the mechanics of what happens to the body, this is a good resource;

Fast heart beat
Shaking
Sometimes vomiting
That's my experience

bushproblems · 02/01/2026 12:02

Panic attacks, catastrophic thinking and the worst by far is depersonalisation.

Thank you for replying. Is it constantly there even though you feel relaxed at times?

as he says he feels okay but he feels these symptoms and these symptoms makes him anxious.

Anxiety can be so crippling, I get heart racing, insomnia, chest pains and also have ridiculously high BP. My stomach twists and turns, I have restless legs in bed. Is he medicated?

Eyesopenwideawake · 02/01/2026 13:27

AKA the anxiety loop. You feel anxious and thus the mind tells the body that there's danger lurking so the body fires up the fight or flight response (all the classic anxiety symptoms) which the mind perceives as proof that there's really something wrong. Remember that the body can not differentiate between what's real and what only exists in the imagination.

The first step to dealing with this is to pinpoint exactly what he is anxious about. This Ted X might help;

I felt achey often when my anxiety was very severe. But I also had so.e blood tests over the summer and I was very low on vitamin D and folate, both of which can cause aching limbs. A course of high strength of both these vitamins stopped the aching.

Palpitations definitely are linked. As is the sensation of being very aware of my heartbeat, I could feel it all the time.

he doesn’t take medication because he also has medication anxiety ( or maybe just very sensitive to medication).
he always ends up with side effects and stops taking them

They always say with any SNRI/SSRI the first 10 days are worst, I call it suicide mountain as had to go through various meds/dosages to find one that worked. The meds have helped, I do still get symptoms but nothing like what they were.

if took almost a whole year until he realised he actually has anxiety. He was just denying it. But he still thinks there is something wrong with his body.

i honestly feel so lost. He starts the day off by crying, and keeps saying he doesn’t know how long he can go for.

can someone be anxious 24/7? He says he needs to be doing something all the time to take his mind off his pains he experiences.

Have you travelled on the plane and felt it got worse?

last trip he wasn’t able to handle at all. But I feel like he needs a small break… maybe in a few weeks if I could plan something.

i told him to get some blood tests done. Everything usually comes back normal, there is no explanation for his symptoms :(

He’s just soo so scared to take the pills.
he always had anxiety towards medication. But I’m thinking rather than living a really low quality of life, it’s just better to try and see.

which ones have worked for you? Did you get any side effects as well?

Ive also got ptsd but according to my psychiatrist venlaflaxine is the best one for dealing with anxiety too. Im on max dose of 375mg. Dont get me wrong its not a magical cure but I think I can safely say it saved my life. I can function better.

fusspot61 · 03/01/2026 18:21

Upset stomach and urgent loose bowels. Then I get anxious about needing the toilet and so the anxious loop continues. Also teeth grinding, sweating, shaking, can’t focus on anything. Such fun.

They also said that he may have childhood ptsd.
how do you think it saved your life? Is it because you can resume with your daily activities/life? did you get social anxiety, or felt like dying etc?

Not on a plane but I'm not bothered with flying. I really avoid saying to anyone that I've suffered with anxiety/it's returned as I know how common it is to hear "I can't do that because of my anxiety". But it can impact life so much. Years ago I used to double the distance of my walk to work as there was a road I hated crossing. It was a busy one way which joined a main road, you just had to wait for the lights to change only I would get so nervous that everyone in the cars would be laughing at me that I'd go a totally different way - which was the wrong way! It was irrational but it would cause me to feel a bit sick, my heart would race, I'd worry about it as I walked up the road.

Medication really helped. I tried two antidepressants which didn't suit me, then found one which did. It was also a time when I was really struggling with depression so the side effects were worth it as I knew they were helping me. My anxiety improved and didn't return after a stopped taking the ADs after a few years, it has recently but I had some cbt and put a lot of effort into making it work.

It's only really when I stopped feeling so anxious about everything that I realised how much it held it back. I learned how to drive, got a promotion, got a new job, all stuff which once seemed unachievable. I wish it hadn't taken until my mid-thirties to feel 'normal'.

How can the catastrophic thinking be controlled? I suffer with this and it’s horrendous.

It can’t be controlled. You have to learn how just not interact with the thoughts and let them wash over you.

I also changed my wording to “what if” to “even if”.
