Does anyone know if there really is a connection between taking SSRIs and dental implant failure?

Ssris can cause dry mouth and can make grinding worse, both of which can be linked to implant failure.

@Lollygaggle thank you. So I’m assuming if you don’t have those symptoms there’s no effect?

There is a four times increase in implant failure in those taking SSRI , some failures may be due to dry mouth and grinding, but also depression itself is also associated lapses in self care , oral hygiene , smoking and vaping and other factors that may affect implant lifespan. There is also a theory that the chemistry of bone is also affected .

Implants are lost easier than your own teeth , how did you lose the teeth in the first place?

It is best to discuss this with the dentist placing implants .

@Lollygaggle oh I see so it’s not so much the ssri - but the lifestyle factors that may be associated with some of those who take medication

No , unfortunately SSRIs have higher implant failure than other antidepressants , although lifestyle factors are also part of the problem.
