Section 3 / S117 for accommodation

Just wondering if anyone has experiences or knowledge about if the S117 will help fund a supported living placement?

My 19 yo stepdd was under section 3 several years ago then a couple years ago she was sectioned again and went to hospital the second time. She is still under the care of a mental health team and attending specialist college. Just that she wants to move a way from us but is obviously not adequately able to take care of herself independently.

Can S117 fund supported living placement?

Can S117 fund supported living placement?

It can, but unlikely to unless the reason that supported living is required is directly related to the mental health issue that led to her being sectioned. You haven't given us enough information to answer

I was told it can help but its not like a forever home or their own flat I think? Are you in touch with the intervention team?

The hospital consultant stated that she should live in an accommodation with monitoring and support day and night rather then living with us. As it s deemed that we re unable to manage her needs. It has been very difficult couple of years at home. Sdd was acting reasonably stable for several months after left hospital. But then she became unstable again for most of the last year and very aggressive at times. Apart from her own safety she also needs to be prepared to manage her own conditions and adult life ahead. I believe these are important to help minimize her future relapse and hospital admissions.

@brownrice All my thoughts are with you. I have a sibling sectioned at the moment and it is very hard to get any information from the hospital. I m interested in your post and truly I wish you well - it is very worrying. 💐

@BasiliskStare thanks. I hope your sibling s situation will improve for your family before too long. My thoughts are with your family.

@fouroclockrock thanks, i dont want her to live in a flat or house on her own. This s unthinkable for her current condition. She needs to be in a supported living accommodation with 24/7 support staff. That s why we find it hard to manage her at home.

If the hospital consultant is recommending supported living then this will presumably part of the discharge planning. They are obliged to do a safe discharge. Supported living is usually funded or covered in some wat through universal credit I think. This should be discussed at the 117 meeting prior to discharge. Nearest relatives can attend as I understand it.

Yes section 117 funding can cover supported living. I regularly see this in my job.

@Littlegreenbauble thanks for your response.

@Notsandwiches thanks for sharing. How to apply s117? Is it too late now after she left hospital for almost 2 years? Although we re trying to find a residential education placement non available at that time! Also her child social worker didn’t get on with the job so now we are in abit of a mess.

S117 does not fund accommodation only care but accommodation with care is a bit of a grey area. It will pay for a care home but not necessarily a supported living flat. It depends on whether it is deemed mainly accommodation or mainly care. She should have a yearly S117 review with a social worker and they would need to agree that this was necessary to prevent her readmission to hospital. Very few MH supported accommodations are 24-7 staffed

Earlybirdvsnightowl · 25/12/2025 12:09

Yes it can. If in hospital the discharge facilitator organises it and links in with adult social care. Outside she would be assigned an Adult social worker, who would asses current need then apply to panel for funding with the s117. I am guessing under mental health team? The care coordinator from there will work closely with adult social care.

Right now, contact her mental health team for advice? Or devoid of any support and she is living with you, your local council can do a care needs assesment with their consent
