I have been prescriped diazepam to help combat anxiety on a car journey. I have always avoided pills and am not sure about whether I really want to take it or not. How will it make me feel and how long do the effects last?

i only use it if i've just not been able to get to sleep or stay asleep for several days running or my ADs fail to control my panic attacks until i can get into to see the doc and adjust my dose.

it just helps me get to sleep, and that's the chief manifestation of my insomnia - not being able to fall asleep.

Thanks.
I'm still in two minds about taking it. I fall into habits very easily and really don't want another habit to form where journeys are concerned.

I had my first hypnosis session yesterday and found it v good. I am feeling on a bit of a downer today though for some reason

Hope the hypnotherapy goes well.

Have you tried herbal calming remedies from the chemist? I find the day time stress relief with valaria in works for me.

I have taken Diazapan in the past although it was for much more severe problems than you are having, and it had the opposite effect. I felt a loss of control which made me even more anxious, and I had terrible trouble coming of it as it is addictive.

It may be just what you need, and taken very occasionaly probably won't cause problems, I'm just posting my experience to give some balance as I think different people can react very differently.

Absolutely bloggy - our chemical make-up is unique so we all respond to drugs in a unique way. Many people seem to accept that illicit drugs affect us all differently, yet don't consider that it's the same with prescription drugs.

Hi there, well I also take diazepam, quite regularly, I have 2 LO's , DD1, 7 next week and my DS1 16 months nearly, I startedtaking it as I have had severe postnatal depression afer both kids. But especially after having little Jack, now 16 mnths nearly...I had to go to a&e one day and be givn it(to sedate me, as I was terrible that day), but was also on AD's too, but as they take a while to kick in, diazepam was prescribed in the meantime. Anyway I am now MUCH better, saw a pyschologist etc, but Jack has special needs, has damage to his brain, happened in pregnancy the consultant thinks, he has bn epileptic from a tiny baby, but seizures now a lot worse, he is on 3 meds a day, but atm he is a LOT better, can now go 5 days with no seizures, from 4 a day sometimes, so major achievement, so just as this happens,he has 1st appointment with physio as he is v, floppy, cannot sit unaided etc, alth commando crawling slowly... they have sed he has hypotonia (low muscle tone) and prob won't walk til 4 or 5, plus only found out about his brain damage 8 weeks ago thru an mri scan...so everything has bn thrown at us at once basically, I agree taking diazepam is NOT a good iea for long periods, but I do believe tht in cases like myself, if we need it at times when very low and stressed in our situations then why not? But dr still reluctant prescribing it, my own gp is off long term sik at the mo, but knows my circumstances inside out, and would prescribe it wenever I was at a bad stage, but the temporary gp is not keen , just adding some more balance to the discussion
