Is it me being fair I’ve been employed at my workplace for around 4 years now, but recently I’ve been suffering mental health I have not been diagnosed but I have dpdr I’m currently working 3 on 3 off but every new employee is doing 4 on 2 off now can my employer change my work shifts to a 4-2 just because I ask for like an afternoon start rather than early morning starts as I’m asking for change in start times and finish times are they able to make this change without changing my days I’m currently awaiting a health occupation to speak to me currently as the shift alternate from like early mornings I’m feel more comfortable and do my health to do like afternoons am I I wrong to ask for this I need suggestions please as how I can kind of ask for this in a professional way,my employers are aware that I have this mental health condition, I did say to them I’ll see how it works I’ve gone back to work but can I get it sorted I’m not on any medication so please tell me thank u

Sorry OP I’m not sure what your question is. What time do you work now, what time do you want to work, and how would that impact the business/your colleagues?

You can in theory ask for a reasonable adjustment but it does have to be reasonable, I don’t understand your post enough to say whether what you are asking for is reasonable or not.

Okay I’m currently working like this so
Day 1 5am -5pm
day 2 5am -5pm
day 3 5am-5pm
day 4 Off
Day 5 off
day 6 off
day 7 5am -11am
day 8 5am-11am
day 9 5am-11am

this is an example of my working shift pattern so I work 12 hours for 3 days and then 3 days off then back in but doing 3 days of 6 hour shifts it’s a 30 hour contract I want to work in afternoons but I suspect I have DPDR I have told my doctors they give me a sick note for 3 weeks to recover, but what would be the next step is it to maybe get a medical report from my GP to say that I’m currently undergoing this, so yeah I want to work afternoons rather than these early morning shifts as they are affecting my sleep pattern e

So what is your suggestion OP, you want to reduce your hours and only work say 11am-5pm? How would that work with the business, is it doable? How would it balance with colleagues?

I’m not sure there is any great need to get medical reports from GP etc at this stage. You can request a reasonable adjustment, it is then up to your employer to decide if it is doable, but without more info I can’t say whether what you’re asking for is reasonable or not.

We're going to need some clarity and punctuation to follow this. You've been suffering mental health? What hours do you want? You're waiting for a health occupation?

Addyman12 · 07/11/2025 16:24

I wanna do 9 hours shift start like 1pm or like 12pm, I haven’t told them yet I want to occupational health I have dpdr derealisation

It’s basically as I’m not getting enough rest, on these early shifts and when I don’t get enough rest the derealisation kicks in I become abit slow in things as I’m happy to work 9 hour shifts like before start like 1-10pm or 2-11pm also as my comapang has a new policy of 4 on 2 off I’m currently on 3 on 3 off can they change this

They can change your shift with notice yes.

How would your proposed times impact the employer & colleagues? Is it doable, or reasonable?

FullOfMomsense · 07/11/2025 17:05

We don't know if your place of work can change your shifts? If the shift patterns vary so it's not just midnight to 8am, 8am to 4pm, 4pm to midnight for everyone, then it should be possible. If you speak to occupational health they will be able to suggest reasonable adjustments to your employer/manager.

Do you want 4 on 2 off? If that's the new policy it likely will be enforced. If you're not diagnosed you might struggle as a lot of reasonable adjustments are likely to be accepted if you have a protected characteristic e.g. long term illness or disability. They don't have to give you reasonable adjustments if they aren't reasonable.

They might offer part time hours as it seems you're struggling with the schedule as a whole.

The only thing you can do is speak to your manager, we can't know what they'll say without knowing how your workplace runs
