Anyone had any experience of Sertraline not working after going on and coming off them several times.Initially went on them this time for post natal anxiety, obssessive thoughts.Wasnt really feeling that depressed didnt think.Have had depression before so know what its like, and been treated successfully with sertraline.Although obssessing improved slightly feel really flat.

You may need a different type of medication or a higher dose. When you come off these types of AD, they are unlikely to be as effective if you go back on them, particularly if this is happening repeatedly.
Do you feel your depression is being managed effectively by your GP? Why do you keep coming off the medication? You shouldn't be having repeated relapses if your depression is under control.

Really because i want to manage without them.Usually go on them for depression but this time became very obssessive and having dark thoughts in pregnancy and post natally so was perscribed them for that.Like i said didnt think i was depressed this time but was very anxious and was put on them for ocd.GP is trying to help this time and said i have to get to 7 weeks till ads reviewed(currently 5)

But a typical course of AD's should not be less than 12 months. They are trying to chemically retrain your brain to respond appropriately to stress and that can't happen in just a few weeks.

scorpio1 · 07/06/2008 20:33

agree. do not feel bad about being on them - why? do you feel bad taking paracetemol for a headache? same thing, no-one can tell you are on AD's.

you need to take them for at least 6 months imo to notice an everlasting effect.

Yes i know they need sometime to work in the long term but surely should expect to see some improvement if they are the right ad at 7 weeks?

give it time and they will work or ask your gp to up the dose or try diffrent medication.

why do you feel you want to manage without them?

ive been taking sertraline for 8 years now, have no desire to come off them atall and have no shame in being on them.....i tried coming off them once and didnt last long!

Ses15 · 08/06/2008 10:15

As a pharmacist, you should expect to see an improvement within 2-4 weeks so if I were you I'd go back to GP. There's different doses of sertraline and also - as YeahBut says - it may be worth trying a different drug that is similar.

Wish id stayed on them now maybe too harsh on myself but suppose thats part of problem i take them for!Have had my dose upped already on 100mg.Like said have been on few times on and off think it stops them working as well. When i compare to first time i took them dont seem to do a lot now. Have took them for different reason this time though,as post natally was suffering with repeated ocd thoughts.Didnt feel depressed more anxious.Didnt have that dont want to get out of bed tearful state i normally would take them for was just very obssessive which i was finding quite distressing.Am less obsessive i suppose but feel quite flat.

Sounds like your symptoms are different and so a different treatment would make sense. Have you ever tried any different ones?

mumtobe2 · 08/06/2008 12:45

Thing is Sertraline meant to be for ocd. Have tried Citalopram but felt lousy.Perhaps should have persevered longer.

often people need a higher dose of ADs to treat OCD than they do for depression.

mumtobe2 · 08/06/2008 21:17

Yes usually take 50 mg for depression but on 100 mg for this episode as its more ocd than depression.
