I continue to struggle to get qany support for trauma on the NHS or privately. Has anyone paid to see a good private psychiatrist in london?

Yes. Do you have insurance?

Without insurance it is eye-wateringly expensive.

If you feel comfortable to share what area of support you are after I am happy to share my experience.

I will also say don’t entirely dismiss your GP / NHS - i was extremely open with my GP and they signposted me to some local NHS resources that I had no idea about and I got a few sessions that helped me at a time when I was in a terrible space.

Happy to discuss and sorry you are in this space.

I do have insurance but am not sure if they will cover a psychiatrist. However they have approvedved 15 sessions with a psychologist but can’t find anyone to take it on do to perceivedrisk which I think is untrue so wondered if a psychiatrist would be able to reassure so I can access.

i first contacted my gp over 3 months ago and have been bounced fron one nhs service to another with seeming no prospect of help and the GP is not comfortable to prescribe meds.

I am looking for support with trauma from a crime. There was also talk of medically unexplained symptoms. However this label is untrue as the symptoms have taken a long time for diagnosis but do explain the symptoms.

Have you tried The Priory? My psychiatrist from there has been amazing but he is an eating disorder specialist so not appropriate for you.
If you have insurance then they will usually cover outpatient and inpatient psychiatric care.
I was in a private Priory ward with patients with trauma so they definitely have psychiatrists who could help you too.

Eatinghurts · 19/10/2025 02:46

I have not tried the priory. The trauma has caused some problems with eating and an nhs ed ref keeps being talked about

If you are very underweight you might struggle to access trauma focused psychotherapy until you have restored some weight. It just tends not to be a safe or helpful treatment until at a healthier weight, but would depend on your bmi, so it might be worth accepting an eds referral in first instance if that is the case.

Eatinghurts · 19/10/2025 03:56

I have accepted eds refferal. Normal bmi but has dropped 5% in about 4 months. Its taking so long for gp to do the refferral though.

Don’t bother waiting for the NHS if you have insurance or even if you don’t and can afford to go private

Eatinghurts · 19/10/2025 04:06

Dont know if my insurance will cover mh support. I can stretch for some cover but therapists privately not comfortable to take it on.

Your policy will make it clear what it covers. You need to try psychiatrist not therapist/psychologist.
What is stopping you making an appointment with a private psychiatrist?

Eatinghurts · 19/10/2025 04:16

I will need a gp referral to check with the insurer and dont want this to further delay care as have private psychologists say best treated on the NHS

I’m confused then. Why are you asking for private psychiatrist recommendations?

Eatinghurts · 19/10/2025 04:25

So that I can self pay for an appointment and get meds potentially as gp not happy to prescribe. I could also potentially use therapy insurance funded if a psychiatrist said this was safe. I think some emdr may resolve things and not sure how much longer can wait for the NHS with things worsening flaashbacks at night and poor sleep v

Ok, I’d recommend The Priory

Not sure how much want to go down the hipnosis route at the moment. I have a criminal injuriesclaimbeing assessed so more traditional diagnosis are important.

Mine is at the priory in north London and is excellent, PM me if you want their name. I've been with them for many years.

The process going privately through medical insurance is;

  1. call insurance and ask if they cover a psychiatrist assessment and/or ongoing therapy
  2. if they say yes, call GP and ask for referral letter
  3. Call insurance back, say you've got the referral letter and get given an authorisation code
  4. find psychiatrist, see psychiatrist, get recommendations for therapist from them
