Constant bloated abdomen

Please help!!! My mental health is on the floor. Ive had a constant bloated stomach since early 2024 (mainly upper -mid abdomen). Ive had colonoscopy, endescopy, h-pylori test (negative), SeCHat test (awaiting results) and an pelvic ultrasound which have all come back ok. Im so scared its Ascites or some type of cancer / organ failure as nothing is shifting it. I lierally wake up like this every single day. No real issues with bowel habits and a GF diet doesnt seem to be helping. Has anyone had similar and found the cause? Im 46, F and from UK. Thanks.

If you started hrt in August that is likely the cause, from what I've heard from other people and gp can expect to gain a stone on hrt and being in menopause. It looks completely normal to me and have same issue. Try not to worry, your body will settle down in time and you find a balance on hrt, I know its uncomfortable but don't feel like you have to starve yourself to loose any weight. Your a woman with changing hormones and should be proud of your body.

Have you had your thyroid bloods checked?

They were all in range in March x

When you say you’re eating less, is that just because you’re trying to lose weight or is it because you’re feeling full more easily? Feeling full can be a symptom of ovarian cancer, as can persistent bloating. (The other two most common symptoms are needing to wee more frequently and tummy pain.) Even if you just have bloating, your GP should be offering you a CA125 blood test and ideally a pelvic ultrasound too. The nurses on Target Ovarian Cancer support line would be able to talk some of this over with you if you’re concerned.

Its a bit of both, im actively making changes to my diet to eliminate possible trigger foods but sometimes I feel full but hungry at the same time. That was my first concern when this started happening and had the ultrasound in May 2024 and all was normal x

Hi, thank you for commenting. This has been since Feb/ March last year so started HRT to see if that would help. To be fair it hasnt made it worse but no improvement either

Oh I see, apologies for not reading properly. One thing to consider is possible edema, since perimenopause I've had ultrasounds an mri scans for swellings in abdomen legs an even my buttock, all came back as edema with no cause. Strange one I know.

The problem is your mental health. Not your stomach. And as a positive, you clearly recognise this on some level

forget your stomach. Normal. You’ve had tests and all is fine. Throw energies into working on your health anxiety which you say is out of control right now

seeking advice on your perfectly normal stomach will only generate more anxiety

Just keep telling yourself ‘ I’ve had all the tests. I am physically well. I have poor mental health right now and that is my issue’

and keep repeating this to yourself

can you speak to the GP and maybe have a switch of medication for your anxiety? It would probably really help

good luck and please - park this worry!

I have a coil and my periods are all over the place at the moment. Doctor said IBS but this is constant, never goes. Gets worse at certain points. I think ive gone down a rabbit hole and its my own fault for googling it constantly

Ibs does this to you. I have it as well and it's a pain. I try to let many hours go btw meals which helps some.

thisisalot · 22/10/2025 19:01

I used to have this issue, people used to ask me if I was pregnant again 🫣 turns out I have IBS and the trigger was beans and pulses. I was vegetarian at the time so was eating them a lot. I was lucky and found out what it was immediately, but you might have to follow the FODMAP diet for a while to eliminate certain foods to find out your trigger.
