So after months of resisting ive gone back on antidepressants for anxiety, ocd, overthinking.
Trying escitalopram this time - only just started but hoping this will work in a few weeks.
Anyone else got any experiences to share of taking escitalopram for anxiety, ocd, overthinking?
TIA 😊

I’ve taken it on and off for over 10 years. It’s saved my life more than once. I tried so many other pills Prozac sertraline mirtazepam but escitalopram is the only one that has ever helped me.

When I come off it I always make sure I taper back up as it can make me feel really odd though . I’m on 20mg a day

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 21/09/2025 13:22

I've been taking it for about 9 years and it's been a lifesaver for me.

Notsurewhattodo98 · 21/09/2025 14:01

Thank you. I’ve started on 5mg and feeling slightly nauseous- hoping this will wear off soon and I can increased to 10mg

Think I’ll have to reduce to 2.5 as not sure I can go to work feeling this nauseous..

I’ve been on 10mg for 5 years. Just gone up to 20mg 4 weeks ago. I did feel nauseous at the beginning. Yes it helps but issues lately have made things worse and I’m also on mitrtazapen in the evening to help with sleep.

youalright · 21/09/2025 20:18

Been taking it over 10 years excellent antidepressant best one iv taken its really helped

Dr13Hadley · 21/09/2025 20:24

I’ve been taking it a long time too what time of day are you taking it? I started from the get go taking it at night time and never had any nausea so that might be something to consider? I’m on 20mg a day and have been for years. Tried venlafaxine, sertraline, fluoxetine and citalopram in the past and this one has been the most effective.

Notsurewhattodo98 · 21/09/2025 20:28

Thank for all the replies so far. It’s really encouraging to hear that escitalopram can help when other SSRIs haven’t. I’ve tried quite a few in the past but they either didn’t work or side effects were too bad.
im really hoping the nausea wears off and it works. I know it takes a few weeks to see an improvement though.

If you can stick with it OP I do think you’ll find it’s worth it in the long run. It is one of the newer and best tolerated ones I believe. Good luck! 💐

Dr13Hadley · 21/09/2025 20:34

The nausea shouldn’t last too long either it just takes a little while for your body to get used to.

sellthebigissue · 21/09/2025 20:44

Saved my life. Been on it for 14 years

Honeybunny75 · 08/10/2025 11:16

Hi ,can i join ?
I've just been prescribed this today
I'm to start at half a tablet of 2.5
Then work up when I feel able
I'm going to take it at night so I hopefully don't feel sick
I have a long history of trying antidepressants that I can never get on with ..so I really hope this time I'm successful

MoonDanceDiner · 08/10/2025 11:24

I've was prescribed this 3 months ago but have been too scared to take it because I already have awful daily IBS and nausea, the thought of making this worse (which is already a source of my anxiety) has prevented me from wanting to try it but I am so worn out and stressed caring for my mum who has advanced dementia that I am close to losing the plot.

How can you prevent the nausea or upset tummy whilst our bodies get used to the medication? Would cutting the 5mg in half and going in low and slow help? Maybe 2.5 every other day to start with?

That sounds like a good idea. Good luck with them, I hope they help.

Oh I'm the same as you, I think stress causes my ibs/nausea and then the ibs/nausea makes me stressed and anxious! I've been on it for about 10 weeks now, and it's having some positive effects, but am going to ask to increase to 15mg soon as I'm definitely not the best idea could be yet.
I go up in 2.5mg increases too because they do make me nauseous for a few days after an increase x

BruFord · 13/10/2025 19:37

I also felt nauseous when I first took it and found it better to take it in the evenings just before I went to bed.

I was started on 20mg about 10 years ago after having panic attacks. I started feeling better after three weeks so hang in there @Notsurewhattodo98. 💐

My doctor reduced it to 10mg after a while and then I tried coming off after two years but the anxiety returned - so I’ve accepted that I’m on it long term.

In terms of what it’s done for me: I’m diagnosed with GAD, have always been an anxious person but when I started having panic attacks, I knew that I needed help.

Nowadays, I can get on with my life without feeling anxious and scared, it’s such a liberating feeling.

I've just been prescribed this, have had citalopram before. Not sure if they feel the same.

That's the same vicious cycle I'm in.

It's reassuring to hear you are seeing some positive effects, good luck, I hope they continue to help.

BruFord · 13/10/2025 21:25

I would honestly recommend trying taking it just before you go to bed to combat nausea. It def. works for me.

Honeybunny75 · 15/10/2025 06:43

Honeybunny75 · 15/10/2025 06:44

Like space me out ,most antidepressants do tend to space me out , worried this will do the same
