Mirtazapine for sleep experiences

Hi I just got some 15mg mirtazapine yesterday to try and help with my sleep. I had a solid 6 hrs and then dozed. I thought I might have slept a bit longer tbh - anyone remember if when they started the first night was the best or if the sleep kind of got better as the days went on? Thanks in advance 😀

I’ve not used mirtazapine but I’ve tried zoplicoone (didn’t work for me) and then sleepy making antihistamines. I was told antipsychotics would be the next step if the antihistamines didn’t work.

The antihistamines (the travel sickness ones) worked really well for me. I didn’t feel sleepy as such but they made it so I could bear to lie in bed awake and wait for sleep. To begin with I still woke up a lot but was able to get back to sleep. So I went from 1-2 hours sleep a night to 5-6 hours pretty much immediately. After a couple of weeks, I had stopped waking up and I regularly get 7-8 uninterrupted sleep a night now. It’s been amazing.

So in your circumstances, I would give it a couple of weeks. It’s very individual so if it isn’t working for you then go back to your provider and ask for an alternative. All the best. Wishing you lots of sleep.

I’ve been on Mirtazapine for over 10 years. They still help me sleep really well. For me it took a month maybe longer before they kicked in fully, I did have some side effects during that time ( feeling extremely tired during the day , increased appetite) but the side effects stopped after about 6 weeks.

A lot of people say they put on weight while they’re on Mirtazapine but that’s never been a problem for me.

It doesn't work properly until about a month in I've found. It does help me get to sleep but it doesn't stop my nightmares. It also makes me groggy and drowsy in the mornings. I don't really like it! But I persevere.

@AutumnLeavesAndCoolerDays thanks - I’m glad your sleep is sorted now😀
@Cookiesandbeans and @DiscoBob do you have it in addition to another antidepressant or just on its own? I feel really groggy today 😖

I don’t take any other antidepressants. I can’t say that Mirtazapine makes me feel happier. I take it only for my severe sleeping problems I used to suffer from before. But as a bonus it has helped with my overactive brain and it’s helped with my social anxiety that I had before. I don’t overthink things anymore.

The grogginess you’re feeling is probably a good sign -it means the medicine is working . I remember that it was very hard to feel so groggy in the beginning, for me it was quite extreme. I had to have a rest at work every day during my lunch break and I was barely functioning. But I’m glad I didn’t give up.
Best of luck to you everyone’s different but I’ll keep my fingers crossed that Mirtazapine will work for you!
