Sabotage or attention-seeking?

Does anyone else cancel their MH appointments when they are feeling particularly bad. I’m not sure if I am sabotaging myself or just attention-seeking?

I don't see how cancelling something that would potentially give you attention is attention seeking? You don't want to talk to anyone about your problems when they feel unmanageable. Presumably you feel confusion and sometimes embarrassed, or you just think it's all pointless? I get like that when I'm feeling really bad.

I hope you can try and find it in your to try and speak about things even when it feels overwhelming. They are there to help you and are used to hearing people's problems.

Wishing you well x

Thanks for replying. It does seem pointless and I feel like I’ve wasted too much of their time already. Also I’m thinking that if they just let me cancel without checking on me then they don’t care about me so I don’t care what happens to me either. I realise that is childish and ridiculous

I have been in that place. The workers are doing a job, they don't care personally. When you need someone to care personally the appointment is meaningless.

On the other hand, their support can help you develop routines that enable you to develop relationships that are personal and meaningful.

They wont check on if they cancel but remember the nhs is severely under funded they have thousands of patients, they simply do not have time. It doesnt mean they dont care its just
not part of their job.

Please please discuss your feelings about this with your therapist. It’s so relevant and important. Also please attend the session when you feel awful - as hard as that is, that can be the best time to go.

I am a psychologist and I absolutely care about my patients.

Previously, I haven’t been allowed to cancel or change my appointments which made me feel like they did care about me. I couldn’t admit that IRL obviously as it is quite sad and pathetic.

It’s not pathetic! I’ve never heard of not being able to cancel appointments. What sort of service are you engaging with, if it’s not too outing to say? Anyway - please do discuss all this with your therapist.

It’s my psychiatrist not therapist

Ah okay. My point still stands though. I hope you’re okay.
